Novel Phytoplankton Blooms: Causes and Impacts of Recurrent Brown Tides and Other Unusual Blooms
In: Coastal and Estuarine Studies, formerly Lecture Notes on Coastal and Estuarine Studies 35
This volume presents an up-to-date account of the phytoplankton blooms which have recently occurred on a world-wide basis, particularly the new "brown tides" along the coasts of several northeastern American states. The individual chapters detail the known causes of these blooms as well as the impacts on important fisheries and other components of the ecosystem such as other plankton and eelgrass meadows. Environmental management concerns, strategies and programs are also presented. This volume will bring the reader up-to-date in terms of scientific knowledge, hypotheses, and new state-of-the-art techniques being employed to investigate microalgae and the environmental conditions conducive to blooms
