The authors have developed an extensive research program in the Odra-Pisuerga and Amaya areas since 2008. This initiative aims to better understand the cultural, political, social and economic changes that took place in this landscape between the Late Iron Age and the end of the Roman world. Due to its rich archaeological heritage, we chose the area of Sasamón as a case study, where we can find an indigenous oppidum, evidence of Roman military presence and a city founded at the very beginning of the Roman Imperial periode. Given the potential of this region for the documentation of archaeological structures through aerial photography, we planned a systematic aerial coverage by using UAV in spring 2019. Among other issues, this archaeological intervention allowed us to increase our knowledge about the Roman military presence in the area, as well as to define more precisely the Roman urbanism of the city of Segisamo. ; Desde 2008 hemos desarrollado un amplio programa de investigación en la comarca del Odra-Pisuerga y tierras de Amaya que tiene como objetivo ahondar en los procesos fundamentales que nos permitan conocer el cambio cultural, político, social y económico producido en el paisaje entre la Segunda Edad del Hierro y el final de la época romana. Por su abrumadora riqueza arqueológica, hemos escogido como caso de estudio el área de Sasamón, donde nos encontramos con un oppidum prerromano, algunos indicios de presencia militar romana y una ciudad fundada a inicios del periodo imperial. Habida cuenta del potencial que esta región presentaba para la documentación de estructuras arqueológicas mediante fotografía aérea, llevamos a cabo una campaña de fotografíado y levantamiento fotogramétrico con UAV en primavera de 2019. Esta intervención nos ha permitido, entre otras cosas, incrementar nuestro conocimiento sobre la presencia militar romana en la zona, así como definir con mayor precisión el urbanismo romano de la ciudad de Segisamo.

Revista Arkeogazte, 5: 239-251. ; [ES] Este artículo presenta el yacimiento inédito de A Serra da Casiña (Valboa, León). Este recinto se localiza en las montañas que separan las actuales provincias de Lugo y León, en las inmediaciones de la ruta natural de comunicación a través del puerto de Pedrafita do Cebreiro. Se describen las estructuras observadas en la serie histórica de ortofotografías, en los datos LiDAR disponibles para el área, además de la inspección del enclave sobre el terreno. Las características formales del sitio y su localización responden a los parámetros propios de los campamentos de marcha (castra aestiua) del ejército romano. Finalmente, se realiza una breve contextualización del establecimiento militar considerando los yacimientos análogos conocidos en su entorno. [EN] This paper presents the unknown archaeological site of A Serra da Casiña (Valboa, León). This enclosure is located in the mountainous area between the provinces of Lugo and León, close to the natural route across the mountain pass of Pedrafita do Cebreiro. The structures were studied through several historical orthophotos, LiDAR visualizations from raw data available for this region, and the archaeological field surveying of the site. Both the morphological characteristics and the location of A Serra da Casiña fit with the specific parameters of Roman marching camps (castra aestiua). Finally, we discuss the historical contextualization of this military establishment considering the presence in the nearby of analogous sites. ; Peer reviewed

Peer reviewed ; Sixty-six new archaeological sites have been discovered thanks to the combined use of different remote sensing techniques and open access geospatial datasets (mainly aerial photography, satellite imagery, and airborne LiDAR). These sites enhance the footprint of the Roman military presence in the northern fringe of the River Duero basin (León, Palencia, Burgos and Cantabria provinces, Spain). This paper provides a detailed morphological description of 66 Roman military camps in northwestern Iberia that date to the late Republic or early Imperial eras. We discuss the different spatial datasets and GIS tools used for different geographic contexts of varied terrain and vegetation. Finally, it stresses out the relevance of these novel data to delve into the rationale behind the Roman army movements between the northern Duero valley and the southern foothills of the Cantabrian Mountains. We conclude that methodological approaches stimulated by open-access geospatial datasets and enriched by geoscientific techniques are fundamental to understand the expansion of the Roman state in northwestern Iberia during the 1st c. BC properly. This renewed context set up a challenging scenario to overcome traditional archaeological perspectives still influenced by the cultural-historical paradigm and the pre-eminence of classical written sources.
