C'est à travers l'institution de la tutelle que ce travail aborde l'importance de la famille, de la parenté et de la communauté. L'auteur étudie, dans des paroisses fort différentes, testaments et des contrats de tutelle et curatelle dans le diocèse d'York. Différents types de tuteurs sont choisis ou désignés dans des cas divers. Par testament, des parents, surtout les mères, sont, autant que possible, désigés comme tuteurs, mais ce choix est moins systématique dans les autres contrats. Les oncles jouent un rôle important dans les deux types de sources. Les membres de parenté plus éloignée, qui apparaissent à l'occasion, restent rares en nombre et leur importance dans certaines paroisses paraît moins liée à la topographie qu'aux conditions démographiques locales. La hiérarchie et le 'bon voisinage' paraissent des éléments de poids dans le choix des tuteurs mais la parenté a pu justifier à l'occasion la désignation de responsables à tous points de vue plus éloignés. Lorsque des circonstances difficiles imposent le recours à des personnes étrangères au cercle familial de l'enfant, la tutelle devient une obligation sociale, appuyée sur un réseau de rapports existant, qui s'en trouvent de ce fait réaffirmés.
