Purpose: This study attempts to evidence the economic and financial health of Spanish hospital companies in the period 2008-2015 and discover the variables that explain their profitability for survival and the opportune performance of their assets during a period of technological revolution and austerity. Design/methodology: The study methodology consists of the short and long-term financial analysis of the companies in the study sample during the period 2008-2015, together with analysis is of their economic state, equity and treasury. To add value to the research, the profitability of the hospital companies has been explained in terms of the following independent variables: short-term solvency, debt, business size, legal form, GDP per capita, population density of and indicators of Corporate Social Responsibility. Findings: In the analyzed period, the economic and financial health of hospital companies is characterized by acceptable liquidity and indebtedness that significantly influence its profitability; this is accompanied by good financial and expenditure management, though it is necessary to improve the management of assets. Research limitations/implications: It was not possible to obtain data for 2016, as it was not available in the database used (SABI). These data would have been useful to evaluate the changes in trends that are taking place in the health sector due to the technological revolution and economic policies affecting it. Practical implications: The health sector is one of the pillars on which society is based, and therefore knowing detailed economic and financial information allows us to make appropriate decisions, both on the hospital level and in terms of the economic policies of governments. Social implications: This study provides evidence of the financially relevant indicators that healthcare companies must control for their survival and to provide proper service to society in general. The research also identifies non-financial variables that contribute to improving the profitability of hospital companies, while also having a good impact on society. In the context of the recent economic crisis, the financial situation of the Spanish health sector has become a major concern for responsible actors from the public and private spheres, because of a decline in public spending and increased demand due to population growth and ageing. The public health system seeks collaborative synergies with the private health system to achieve better health care results, cut waiting lists and cope with financial pressure. The private health sector currently owns 452 hospitals in Spain (57% of the country's total). This paper analyses the financial statements of hospital companies in the Spanish private healthcare system, using compositional data (CoDa) methodology. It identifies a significant relationship between financial statement structure and corporate social responsibility (CSR). Relevant CSR indicators include a sustainability report according to the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), accreditation by the Joint Commission International (JCI) and ISO 14001, 50001 and 26000 accreditations. These indicators reduce asset turnover and increase debt quality: the proportion of long-term debt within total liability. From a methodological perspective, the paper proposes the first application CoDa in statistical models to predict financial statements from non-financial variables, and the first use of CoDa in partial-least-squares structural equation models (PLS-SEM). El objetivo del estudio es analizar la calidad de las páginas web de los hospitales privados de Andalucía y Cataluña, así como los indicadores que contribuyen a mejorar el Gobierno Corporativo para una eficiente utilización de los fondos públicos que obtienen mediante los conciertos. El estudio responde a la demanda de información digital, transparente y de calidad en las organizaciones sanitarias, en consonancia con el marco legal español y europeo. La metodología de trabajo, utilizada y contrastada en un estudio previo, consiste en explorar la puntuación de las páginas web de las empresas hospitalarias privadas de ambas comunidades, mediante un cuestionario y herramientas de accesibilidad acreditados. Esta exploración permite identificar la información web de calidad y su relación con indicadores de Buen Gobierno Corporativo, definidos y contrastados en el Modelo de Información Integrada a nivel nacional e internacional. Los resultados señalan que la calidad web aumenta con memorias de Gobierno Corporativo, un mayor tamaño de los hospitales privados y la concentración del accionariado.

El estudio da respuesta a la creciente demanda de información digital de las instituciones sanitarias y el cumplimiento de la Ley de Transparencia, Acceso a la Información Pública y Buen Gobierno. La metodología utilizada, avalada por publicaciones académicas solventes, consiste en explorar la puntuación de los hospitales objeto de estudio mediante cuestionarios y herramientas de accesibilidad que permiten identificar una información web de calidad, en relación directa con los indicadores de RSC, según contrastes estadísticos, especialmente en el caso de hospitales públicos.

The aim of this research is to analyse the quality of websites of the public and private hospitals of the Community of Madrid; as well as to identify its relationship with the indicators of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). This study is in tune with the increasing demand of digital information about health institutions in follow-up of the Law of Transparency, Access to the Public Information and Good Government.
