Abstract. The seismic hazard of the Iberian Peninsula is analysed using a nonparametric methodology based on statistical kernel functions; the activity rate is derived from the catalogue data, both its spatial dependence (without a seismogenic zonation) and its magnitude dependence (without using Gutenberg–Richter's relationship). The catalogue is that of the Instituto Geográfico Nacional, supplemented with other catalogues around the periphery; the quantification of events has been homogenised and spatially or temporally interrelated events have been suppressed to assume a Poisson process. The activity rate is determined by the kernel function, the bandwidth and the effective periods. The resulting rate is compared with that produced using Gutenberg–Richter statistics and a zoned approach. Three attenuation relationships have been employed, one for deep sources and two for shallower events, depending on whether their magnitude was above or below 5. The results are presented as seismic hazard maps for different spectral frequencies and for return periods of 475 and 2475 yr, which allows constructing uniform hazard spectra.

Are the policies designed by decision-makers differing from society's wishes and preferences? The present paperanalyzes the divergences between forest policy and public opinion in the Region of Valencia (Comunidad Valenciana)in Eastern Spain. The data is based on an extensive telephone survey of the general public on their perception of forestryissues. The issues studied include attitudes regarding forest fires, silvicultural treatments, the externalities producedby forest owners, and the state forest service's role related to these issues. In total, the answers of 823 respondentswere analyzed using classification trees. The results of the analysis showed a large divergence between the desires,preferences and priorities of society, on the one hand, and the policies implemented by the regional government, onthe other. The study concludes that communication strategies concerning sustainable forest management need to befurther developed by the responsible authorities, with the input of the research community. ; ¿Difieren las políticas diseñadas por los responsables de la toma de decisiones, de los deseos y preferencias de la sociedad?El presente artículo analiza las divergencias entre la política forestal y la opinión pública en la Comunidad Valenciana.Los datos están basados en una amplia encuesta telefónica dirigida al público en general sobre su percepción en temasforestales. Los temas estudiados incluyen actitudes hacia los incendios forestales, los tratamientos silvícolas, las externalidadesgeneradas por los propietarios forestales, y el papel de la administración forestal hacia estos temas. En total seanalizaron las respuestas de 823 encuestados utilizando árboles de clasificación. Los resultados del análisis mostraron unaamplia divergencia entre los deseos, preferencias y prioridades de la sociedad, por una parte, y las políticas implementadaspor el gobierno regional, por la otra. El estudio concluye que las estrategias de comunicación referentes a la gestión forestalsostenible necesitan ser desarrolladas por las autoridades responsables, con el aporte de la comunidad científica.

The aim of this work is to put forth some basic methodological aspects that are being followed in the demanding task of the development of a telemedical platform for the efficient control and management of chronic elderly patients. Among the main methodological concepts proposed there is: an integrated market-oriented approach, a user-centered design, an evaluation-driven development and a work plan

Aim  This study investigate what characteristics of supported employment increase quality of life and whether quality of life is higher in supported employment workers or the sheltered ones in Spain. Typicalness, the degree to which the characteristics of a job are the same as those of co‐workers without a disability in the same company, was considered as one of the supported employment characteristics in the analysis.Method  Two groups were put together to obtain the data using two questionnaires that were administered by trained professionals. Correlational analysis of the data and manova were also employed.Results  No differences were found between the two groups regarding quality of life but results indicate that in supported employment, high levels of typicalness are associated with a higher quality of life and that the handling of certain characteristics of support and the job, for example the hours of direct external support, are related to the enhancement of quality of life of the workers.Conclusions  Workers in supported employment show the same quality of life as those in sheltered employment centers. In Spain, the greater the typicalness of the employment, the higher the quality of life. The implications of this for the amount of direct external support for workers with disability is that such support should be used only when absolutely necessary – the minimum support necessary to encourage development.

The entorhinal cortex (EC) is a brain region that has been shown to be essential for memory functions and spatial navigation. However, detailed three-dimensional (3D) synaptic morphology analysis and identification of postsynaptic targets at the ultrastructural level have not been performed before in the human EC. In the present study, we used Focused Ion Beam/Scanning Electron Microscopy to perform a 3D analysis of the synapses in the neuropil of medial EC in layers II and III from human brain autopsies. Specifically, we studied synaptic structural parameters of 3561 synapses, which were fully reconstructed in 3D. We analyzed the synaptic density, 3D spatial distribution, and type (excitatory and inhibitory), as well as the shape and size of each synaptic junction. Moreover, the postsynaptic targets of synapses could be clearly determined. This article proposes to reflect on current development models and their transformation from building a new knowledge base that goes beyond the neutrality of science and technological determinism. Knowledge is not neutral, nor determines for themselve the development. The aim is to solve cognition stereotypical situations effective from collective work, reflection and diffusion of this new thinking to clarify, through a process of interaction, the situation; to turn this conflict into a new cognitive resolution which allows ways to approach the problems in a collective, democratic and inclusive perspective. The proposal is made to reach Technology and aims to revitalize the role of the architect in his ability to insert citizen in a social, historical and cultural context that requires professionals and academics willing to dissolve the idea of technological neutrality. This requires a qualitative methodological structure and paradigmatic positioning constructivist that allows thinking in selecting a technology geographically and culturally located as a substantive part to find "another development model", based on a social, environmental and economically approach. ; El presente artículo propone reflexionar acerca de los modelos de desarrollo vigentes y su posible transformación a partir de la construcción de una nueva base cognitiva que supere la neutralidad de la ciencia y el determinismo tecnológico. Los conocimientos no son neutros y tampoco determinan por sí mismos el desarrollo. El objetivo consiste en resolver las situaciones estereotipadas de cognición vigentes a partir del trabajo colectivo, la reflexión y la difusión de este nuevo pensamiento para esclarecer, a través de un proceso de interacción, la situación; hasta convertir este conflicto en una nueva resolución cognitiva que dé paso a formas de abordar los problemas bajo una perspectiva colectiva, democrática e incluyente. La propuesta que se realiza para el abordaje de la Tecnología pretende revitalizar el rol del arquitecto en su capacidad de ciudadano inserto en un contexto social, histórico y cultural que requiere de profesionales y académicos dispuestos a disolver la idea de la neutralidad tecnológica. Para ello es necesaria una estructura metodológica cualitativa y un posicionamiento paradigmático constructivista, que permita pensar en la selección de una tecnología situada territorialmente y culturalmente como parte sustantiva para encontrar "otro modelo de desarrollo", basado en un enfoque social, ambiental y económicamente sustentable

The hippocampus plays a key role in contextual conditioning and has been proposed as an important component of the cocaine addiction brain circuit. To gain knowledge about cocaine-induced alterations in this circuit, we used focused ion beam milling/scanning electron microscopy to reveal and quantify the three-dimensional synaptic organization of the neuropil of the stratum radiatum of the rat CA1, under normal circumstances and after cocaine-self administration (SA). Most synapses are asymmetric (excitatory), macular-shaped, and in contact with dendritic spine heads. After cocaine-SA, the size and the complexity of the shape of both asymmetric and symmetric (inhibitory) synapses increased but no changes were observed in the synaptic density. This work constitutes the first detailed report on the 3D synaptic organization in the stratum radiatum of the CA1 field of cocaine-SA rats. The Pt-catalysed addition of silanes to functional groups such as alkenes, alkynes, carbonyls and alcohols, i.e. the hydrosilylation reaction, is a fundamental transformation in industrial and academic chemistry, often claimed as the most important application of Pt catalysts in solution. However, the exact nature of the Pt active species and its mechanism of action is not well understood yet, particularly regarding regioselectivity. Here, experimental and computational studies together with an ad hoc graphical method show that the hydroaddition of alkynes proceeds through Pt-Si-H clusters of 3-5 atoms (metal(oid) association) in parts per million amounts (ppm), which decrease the energy of the transition state and direct the regioselectivity of the reaction. Based on these findings, new extremely-active (ppm) microporous solid catalysts for the hydrosilylation of alkynes, alkenes and alcohols have been developed, paving the way for more environmentally-benign industrial applications. Abstract Synaptic dysfunction or loss in early stages of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is thought to be a major structural correlate of cognitive dysfunction. Early loss of episodic memory, which occurs at the early stage of AD, is closely associated with the progressive degeneration of medial temporal lobe (MTL) structures of which the transentorhinal cortex (TEC) is the first affected area. However, no ultrastructural studies have been performed in this region in human brain samples from AD patients. In the present study, we have performed a detailed three-dimensional (3D) ultrastructural analysis using focused ion beam/scanning electron microscopy (FIB/SEM) to investigate possible synaptic alterations in the TEC of patients with AD. Surprisingly, the analysis of the density, morphological features and spatial distribution of synapses in the neuropil showed no significant differences between AD and control samples. However, light microscopy studies showed that cortical thickness of the TEC was severely reduced in AD samples, but there were no changes in the volume occupied by neuronal and glial cell bodies, blood vessels, and neuropil. Thus, the present results indicate that there is a dramatic loss of absolute number of synapses, while the morphology of synaptic junctions and synaptic spatial distribution are maintained. Purpose of the studySwitching to ritonavir‐boosted darunavir (DRV/r) in patients treated with double ritonavir‐boosted protease inhibitors (PI/r) may result in better tolerability, less pill burden, better lipid profile and a lower cost, while maintaining virologic efficacy.MethodsMulticentre, concurrent cohort observational study. HIV‐infected adults with HIV RNA <50 copies/mL for at least the previous 12 months on a double PI/r‐based therapy were offered to switch to DRV/r (DRV group) or to continue on the same regimen (control group). Visits (including blood tests, adherence and side effects assessment) were performed every 3 months, with a follow‐up of at least one year. Descriptive values are described as n (%) or median (interquartile range). Changes from baseline in quantitative variables have been calculated with the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test and comparisons between groups have been performed with the Mann‐Whitney test, using SPSS 20.0 statistical package.Summary of results65 patients were included (35 DRV group and 30 control group); median age was 46 (40–49) years, 76% were male. At baseline, double‐boosted PI regimens were lopinavir‐atazanavir/r 24%, lopinavir‐saquinavir/r 46%, lopinavir‐fosamprenavir/r 8%, atazanavir‐saquinavir/r 18% and others 4%. There were no significant differences between groups in baseline characteristics, except for patients who switched to DRV had a higher number of prior antiretroviral regimens [6 (3–8) vs 2 (1–4), p=.002]. Of the patients who switched to DRV/r, 46% received DRV/r once‐daily and 54% twice‐daily. After 48 weeks, one patient in each arm had virologic failure and one patient in the DRV arm stopped treatment due to side effects (depressive syndrome); there were no episodes of rash or clinical hepatitis. Efficacy (HIV RNA <50 copies/mL) was similar in the DRV and control groups by intention‐to‐treat analysis (94 vs. 97%, p=NS). There were no significant differences in laboratory parameters between treatment groups except for a decrease in total bilirrubin in patients who switched to DRV/r (−0.69 vs +0.28 mg/dL, p=.028). Treatment switch represented a median saving of 157 (32–264) euros per patient per month.ConclusionsSwitching from a double‐boosted PI regimen to DRV maintains virologic efficacy, with good tolerability and a lower cost.
