Changes in contemporary immigration trends of legal immigrants, refugees, undocumented immigrants, & individuals with working visas are analyzed within social, demographic, & economic contexts. Three primary findings are presented: immigration has increased & has expanded the US's ethnic & racial composition; immigrants continue to encounter wage stagnation & employment uncertainty; increases in interethnic & interracial marriages have obfuscated racial & ethnic boundaries & have augmented tolerance for minority racial & ethnic groups. Contending that immigration policies in industrialized countries must incorporate environmental, trade, & foreign policy concerns, it is concluded that fair immigration policies will be achieved when the public's economic anxiety is cured, thus permitting the strengthening of the social contract. 4 Tables, 2 Figures, 56 References.
