Children's diverse experiences during periods of conflict, post-conflict and peacetime reveal that their roles in society and political communities are complex. Based on this premise, this book suggests that understanding children's roles involves a critical analysis of where the child is situated within her/his family, within socio-political networks and within the state. Through examining various case studies in South Asia, a region that is marked as much by its homogeneity as by its immense diversity, the book observes that significant tensions exist between universal and local approaches to childhood. It reflects how the development of international and national discourses on children's rights and protection is relevant to children's everyday lives in situations of conflict

This book gives a detailed political analysis of nationbuilding processes and how these are closely linked to statebuilding and to issues of war crime, gender and sexuality, and marginalization of minority groups. With a focus on the Indian subcontinent, the author demonstrates how the state itself is involved in the construction of a gendered identity, and how control of women and their sexuality is central to the nationbuilding project. She applies a critical feminist approach to two major conflicts in the Indian subcontinent - the Partition of India in 1947 and the Liberation War of Banglad.

Abstract
This article observes that with the intensification of humanitarian crisis in Tigray and the Horn of Africa region, an important question re-emerges: how could the international community, in cooperation with national and local actors, provide protection to vulnerable civilian populations against state repression? How could this be even possible when international practitioners face the threat of expulsions and the local human rights groups face possible retaliation. The violent civil war raging in Tigray once again reveals that the responsibility to protect (R2P) norm often encounters a paradox – state sovereignty vs international community's responsibility.

The year of 1971 became a signifying marker transforming the political dynamics of South Asia. Forty years on, the International Crimes Tribunal, set up for the purposes of prosecuting Bangladeshi citizens who have allegedly committed war crimes during 1971, has started its proceedings.1 While the Tribunal has generated much international interest and also criticism, the thin scholarship on the conflict is gradually increasing, ranging from innovative initiatives such as conversations about the war involving Bangladeshi, Pakistani and Indian analysts;2 visual media attempting to unlock contentious and often concealed narratives through films, blog posts, fictions and non-fictions; and finally recent academic publications delving deep into various openings, questioning the truth or still multiple truths that framed 1971 as a sacrosanct moment.

The endorsement of R2P by the unga and the unsc does not give the doctrine legal status, however, such broad acceptance in the international community gives the concept some normative force. Although the unga formulation of R2P can be considered to be the most authoritative, as demonstrated by the articles in this special issue, the doctrine could be further advanced in relation to children in conflict zones. This article provides some reflections about recent unicef emergency response experiences in dealing with the Rohingya displacement in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh.

Bangladesh has achieved some impressive social and developmental goals in its health and education sectors. It has also effectively dealt with the adversities caused by the downturn of the global economy, and focused on strengthening its military capabilities to protect its national interests. However, environmental issues, growing international scrutiny about a fair war crimes trial, human rights concerns, the India-Bangladesh border, and transit and water sharing arrangements remain key challenges.

Bangladesh in 2010 experienced a unique period in its domestic politics, and a boost in its bilateral and regional relationships. However, a fragile political system, poor human rights record, trade imbalances, and climate change vulnerabilities continued throughout the year and contributed to the everyday insecurities of the population.
