; Energy poverty is a phenomenon of increasing importance at both European and national level. Despite this growing interest, in Italy there is not a shared definition of energy poverty even if there exist various public interventions to alleviate or reduce this problem (for instance the so-called bonus gas). There is also a lack of quantitative studies, especially at regional level. In this contribution, starting from an original database, we will specify a multilevel model to estimate the energy poverty incidence and evolution across the areas of the city of Trieste.
AbstractMost social networks present complex structures. They can be both multi-modal and multi-relational. In addition, each relationship can be observed across time occasions. Relational data observed in such conditions can be organized into multidimensional arrays and statistical methods from the theory of multiway data analysis may be exploited to reveal the underlying data structure. In this paper, we adopt an exploratory data analysis point of view, and we present a procedure based on multiple factor analysis and multiple correspondence analysis to deal with time-varying two-mode networks. This procedure allows us to create static displays in order to explore network evolutions and to visually analyze the degree of similarity of actor/event network profiles over time while preserving the different statuses of the two modes.
The effects of the spread of Covid-19 have had important consequences on everybody's life but also had a dramatic impact for the population inside correctional centers in Italy; these issuses have finally received great attention over the last few months. This paper is primarily focused on the analysis of the critical aspects of overcrowding in Italian correctional centers, a cyclical issue which has become even more critical during the current pandemic emergency. Our research aims at describing the development of the number of prisoners before and after government legislative actions taken in early 2020 to reduce overcrowding of prisoners; furthermore we study these effects in combination with the main features of some Italian correctional centers. There is some evidence that the number of prisoners first decreased but then started increasing again, as it had always happened after similar governative decrees adopted in other cases in the past; moreover, it is also clear that the available capacity of jails is not homogeneous in Italy and that the situation is different between the different regions. The main difficulty encountered in preparing the research analysis for this contribution has been the access to data related to the dissemination of the pandemic inside correctional centers; in fact, in some frameworks such as prisons, this kind of information is not often available or completely updated.
This research presents a data set of the terrorist attacks that took place in Western countries between 11th September 2001 and 31st December 2016. The study begins by addressing both the conceptual problem of the definition of terrorism and its political significance, and the historical origins of Islamic or jihadist ter¬rorism. The data set used here is based on the University of Maryland's Global Terrorism Database, which has been integrated and extended using journalistic sources, scientific journals, and governmental and in¬stitutional websites. The general and specific traits of the terrorist phenomenon are investigated through multidimensional analysis of the data (AMD) and the analysis of their main components (ACP). The analysis throws into relief both the variety of the terrorist attacks and of the terrorist organizations involved, and in particular, how the modus operandi of the cells linked to Al-Qaida differ compared to those attached to other subjects or groups.
In this paper we present the results of a network analysis on the mobility of the highly skilled workers in the regional labor market of Friuli Venezia Giulia. We make use of the Social Network Analysis (SNA) methods and of a new dataset on mobility of graduates and PHD's from the Regional Universities in the period 2005-2013. The new dataset is based on three different sources: the Administrative archives of the three Universities of Friuli Venezia Giulia (graduates and PhD), the Public Labour Agency (individual hiring flows), the Bureau van Dijk (company's data). The network analysis is performed for the period 2005-2013 and for two sub-periods separately (2005-2008 and 2009-2013) in order to disentangle the possible changes determined by the recent severe economic crisis. Results show that the hiring flows assume a scale-free network configuration, in the overall as well as in the two sub-periods, where the larger and innovative regional firms play a crucial role for the overall connectivity. However, from a micro-level perspective, in the second period emerges an increasing level of homophily, that is the workers' mobility mostly happen within groups of similar firms (according to our classification of innovative vs traditional firms). Finally, from a methodological point of view, network analysis seems to be a promising approach to better understand labour market structure and dynamics.
AbstractA stream of research on co-authorship, used as a proxy of scholars' collaborative behavior, focuses on members of a given scientific community defined at discipline and/or national basis for which co-authorship data have to be retrieved. Recent literature pointed out that international digital libraries provide partial coverage of the entire scholar scientific production as well as under-coverage of the scholars in the community. Bias in retrieving co-authorship data of the community of interest can affect network construction and network measures in several ways, providing a partial picture of the real collaboration in writing papers among scholars. In this contribution, we collected bibliographic records of Italian academic statisticians from an online platform (IRIS) available at most universities. Even if it guarantees a high coverage rate of our population and its scientific production, it is necessary to deal with some data quality issues. Thus, a web scraping procedure based on a semi-automatic tool to retrieve publication metadata, as well as data management tools to detect duplicate records and to reconcile authors, is proposed. As a result of our procedure, it emerged that collaboration is an active and increasing practice for Italian academic statisticians with some differences according to the gender, the academic ranking, and the university location of scholars. The heuristic procedure to accomplish data quality issues in the IRIS platform can represent a working case report to adapt to other bibliographic archives with similar characteristics.
