AbstractKurds make up about a fifth of Turkey's population. Turkey has taken steps – albeit slowly and reluctantly – towards increased recognition of Kurdish cultural and linguistic rights. However, within Turkey there is also a steeply rising tide of Turkish nationalism, prejudice and intolerance towards Kurds, and increasing anti‐Kurdish sentiment. This article brings studies of Kurdishness and Turkishness into a single conversation and traces the relationship between Turkish modernity, Orientalized Kurdishness and the construction of Turkishness as the efendi (master) identity. It does this by drawing attention to "strategies of exclusion and inclusion" in the construction of official Turkish history, and relates these to the way in which the tense borders between Kurds and Turks are maintained and currently reproduced. It also presents a normative argument in favour of "humbling Turkishness" and "solidarity trading zones".

AbstractThis article considers interaction, negotiation and exchange across the borders of systems of knowledge, be they disciplines, moral frameworks, cultures or ideologies, by focusing on "translation" and "second language learning" as epistemic tools. It does this by first elaborating the incommensurability thesis which is centred on the notion of untranslatability. The article then proposes an alternative "epistemology of interaction", namely the "second language learning thesis" as more suitable for describing the movement of ideas and practices across space and time. It argues that whilst translation is embedded in difficulties of one‐to‐one mappability, and at times ignorant of its role in facilitating power relations, "the second language learning thesis" aims to (1) capture the socially constituted nature of borders, interactions, transgressions, exchanges (and raids); (2) draw attention to the different types and layers of second language learning (from "pidgins" to bilingualisms) and (3) lay bare, where possible, the asymmetric nature of interactions, including epistemological and linguistic hegemony. In so doing, it turns attention to "strategies of exclusion" and "strategies of inclusion" in the policing of borders between cultures and disciplines, whether they are separated temporally or spatially.

Bu araştırmanın amacı; sağlık çalışanlarının sanal kaytarma davranışı sergileme eğilimlerini belirlemek ve bu davranışların çeşitli bireysel, demografik ve işyerinde bilgisayar ile internet kullanımına yönelik özelliklere göre farklılık gösterip göstermediğini ortaya koymaktır. Bu kapsamda bir üniversite hastanesinde görev yapan 259 sağlık çalışanından toplanan veriler değerlendirilmiştir. Yapılan analizler; sağlık çalışanlarının sanal kaytarma davranışlarının düşük seviyede olduğunu ve çalışanların sanal kaytarma davranışı alt boyutlarının yaş, cinsiyet, medeni durum, bilgisayar kullanım yılı ve işyerinde internete erişmek için kullanılan araçlar açısından istatistiksel olarak anlamlı farklılıklar gösterdiğini ortaya koymaktadır. 

The promise of science lies in expectations of its benefits to societies and is matched by expectations of the realisation of the significant public investment in that science. In this paper, we undertake a methodological analysis of the science of biobanking and a sociological analysis of translational research in relation to biobanking. Part of global and local endeavours to translate raw biomedical evidence into practice, biobanks aim to provide a platform for generating new scientific knowledge to inform development of new policies, systems and interventions to enhance the public's health. Effectively translating scientific knowledge into routine practice, however, involves more than good science. Although biobanks undoubtedly provide a fundamental resource for both clinical and public health practice, their potentiating ontology—that their outputs are perpetually a promise of scientiWc knowledge generation— renders translation rather less straightforward than drug discovery and treatment implementation. Biobanking science, therefore, provides a perfect counterpoint against which to test the bounds of translational research. We argue that translational research is a contextual and cumulative process: one that is necessarily dynamic and interactive and involves multiple actors. We propose a new multidimensional model of translational research which enables us to imagine a new paradigm: one that takes us from bench to bedside to backyard and beyond, that is, attentive to the social and political context of translational science, and is cognisant of all the players in that process be they researchers, health professionals, policy makers, industry representatives, members of the public or research participants, amongst others. ; Peer-reviewed ; Publisher Version ; 54597
