Chronicles the evolution of transportation policy & the development of a railroad & later highway system across the Ottoman Empire & Turkish Republic, 18502-1950s, in the context of globalization. The role of the Ottoman railway network in the empire's integration into the global market is discussed, along with its domestic economic impacts. In the post-WWII period, the development of a strong transportation infrastructure went hand-in-hand with Turkey's goal of westernization, & attention turned to the creation of a system of highways, which continues to be the backbone of the nation's economy. By the end of the Second World War, the Ottoman Empire was in a state of disintegration. As the international powers increased their strategic interests in the area, it became more & more difficult for the Ottoman Empire to maintain its territorial integrity. Britain had formerly been an ally of the Ottoman Empire. However, after the First World War, Britain began to pursue its partition. In particular, Britain sought to win Mosul for Iraq, which was under the British mandate. In 1918, Mosul came under the control of Britain. In the ensuing Frontier Treaty of 1926, Turkey received 10% of the Iraqi governments royalty payments for 25 years. From 1931 to 1952, Turkey received royalty payments regularly. However, insufficient payment or lack of payment altogether proved to be an ongoing problem. Tables. R. Prince
