The neoliberal order, introduced in Poland in the course of post-socialist transformation, constituted a context of action, as well as a repertoire of rules and practices people becoming corporate managers had to learn to cope with. As some took it for granted as 'the only' way of joining the economies of the idealised 'West', and through their daily practices of efficiency and profit-maximisation, they were actually doing the neoliberalism; others, maintaining the distance towards the new world of 'freedom and opportunity' managed to develop a more critical stand. These were not actively doing neoliberalism, but merely making do with it, taking it strategically or even instrumentally. In the paper, the role of biographical work and biographical knowledge is analysed in the process of distancing, which enables monitoring and negotiations of the relations between the acting self and the neoliberal context of action.

On the basis of 'objective' indicators and statistical analysis, the level of integration is measured and assessed as 'low' or 'high', 'sufficient' or 'insufficient'. This is the perspective of the receiving countries (not migrants), which clearly dominates in this field of study. Seeing this perspective as partial, we decided to ask migrants themselves what integration means to them. The analysis of the narrative interviews conducted with Ukrainian, Srilankese and Senegalese men and women living in the South of Italy has demonstrated that integration for them is more related to the notion of 'good life' than to a desire of becoming 'one of us'.2 Our interviewees' approach to integration is very pragmatic as pursuing their own life projects, even if they turn out to be relatively modest, is after all their main concern. From their narratives emerges an idea of integration as acceptance and satisfaction, but without aspirations for equality, participation and full social and political rights, which calls for more active integration policies.

Na bazie "obiektywnych" wskaźników i analizy statystycznej dokonuje się pomiaru i oceny poziomu integracji jako "niskiego" lub "wysokiego", "wystarczającego" bądź nie. Dominuje na tym polu perspektywa krajów przyjmujących, pomijająca nierzadko punkt widzenia imigrantów. Aby przezwyciężyć jednostronność tej dominującej perspektywy, postanowiliśmy zapytać samych imigrantów, czym jest dla nich integracja. Analiza wywiadów narracyjnych przeprowadzonych z osobami pochodzącymi z Ukrainy, Sri Lanki i Senegalu, mieszkającymi od lat w południowych Włoszech, pokazała nam, że integracja dla nich jest bardziej związana z pojęciem "dobrego życia" niż z pragnieniem stania się "jednym z nas". Podejście naszych narratorów do integracji jest pragmatyczne, ponieważ jest ono skierowane przede wszystkim na realizację ich projektów życiowych. Z narracji naszych rozmówców wyłania się obraz integracji jako akceptacji i satysfakcji, jednakże bez aspiracji do równości, uczestnictwa i pełnych praw politycznych i społecznych, co oznacza, że polityka integracyjna musi być dużo bardziej aktywna.
Artykuł prezentuje wyniki badań nad wzorami karier zawodowych podejmowanych przez robotników i ludzi biznesu w okresie głębokiej zmiany społecznej w Polsce po 1989 roku. Pojęcia kariery, zasobów i pracy biograficznej umożliwiły zbadanie interakcji "obiektywnych" i "subiektywnych" aspektów życia zawodowego. Zastosowanie metodologii teorii ugruntowanej do analizy ponad dwustu wywiadów narracyjnych ze współczesnymi polskimi robotnikami i ludźmi biznesu pozwoliło na wykroczenie poza analizę indywidualnych przypadków i rekonstrukcję typologii karier. Wyróżnione wzory "kotwicy", "patchworku" i "konstrukcji" idą w poprzek podziałów wyznaczonych przez dyskurs "wygranych" i "przegranych" transformacji, hierarchię organizacyjną oraz stratyfikację. Najbardziej nagradzany w nowej rzeczywistości wzór wielotorowej i długofalowo planowanej kariery-konstrukcji okazuje się jednak trudno dostępny dla większości robotników, drobnych przedsiębiorców i niższej kadry menedżerskiej. W efekcie, obiektywne nierówności na poziomie posiadanych zasobów przekładają się na procesy biograficzne prowadząc do "naturalizacji" chaotycznej kariery-patchwork oraz "pracy na pozycję" w obrębie kariery długofalowo zakotwiczonej w jednej firmie.
Sowohl die EU als auch die noch vor einigen Jahren dem politischen Lager des Warschauer Paktes zugehörigen Staaten stehen vor der Frage, wie eine politische Integration im erweiterten Europa erreicht werden kann. Dabei werden die Bewohner der Grenzregionen und die regionalen politischen Akteure mit Anforderungen konfrontiert, die sich national und regional unterschiedlich darstellen. Der vorliegende Beitrag untersucht die vielfältigen politischen, vor allem aber sozialen Auswirkungen der neuen Situation an den Grenzen der östlichen Beitrittsländer. Die Ausführungen zur polnischen Grenzregion zu Tschechien und Deutschland geht der These nach, dass nicht nur die weitreichenden Veränderungen an der nationalen Grenze, sondern auch der Systemwechsel den Bewohnern der Grenzregion neue biographische Strategien abverlangen. An der Grenze kann die Gleichzeitigkeit von starken Bezügen auf traditionelle Verhaltensmuster und der Integration in ein neues System beobachtet werden. Folglich changieren die Strategien der Anrainer zwischen zweckorientierter Anpassung und einer Rückbesinnung auf traditionelle soziale Bezüge. (ICA2)
Digital platforms provide many workers with vital income and offer the promise of flexible work, and yet also contribute to experiences of precariousness and exploitation, particularly with regard to pressures to undertake unpaid work. This article explores why unpaid labour is necessary and what drives its extent and form among diverse types of digital platforms. We theorize two ideal types of 'open' and 'closed' socio-technical platform regimes of worker autonomy, building on sociological insights about socio-technical systems, management control over worker autonomy and labour market segmentation by skill. In principle, 'open' ('closed') platform regimes grant relatively high (low) worker autonomy in terms of access to the platform, paid work and control over work tasks. Analysing five case studies, illustrative of 'open' and 'closed' regimes, we investigate unpaid labour in low-skill locational (i.e. food delivery) platforms and medium/high-skill online (i.e. freelancing) platforms. In brief, digital freelancers exhibit a lower extent of unpaid labour within relatively 'open' regimes, owing to greater autonomy over access to, and control over, platform work in a sector requiring medium/high skills. Conversely, 'closed' regimes mitigate unpaid labour for food-delivery platforms by providing market shelter for workers, who are easily replaced in an overcrowded sector requiring few skills.
ResumenSe explora cómo la pandemia de COVID‐19 ha afectado a las experiencias laborales y vitales de las y los trabajadores de plataformas de trabajo localizado y en línea en Polonia y cómo estos han respondido. Las importantes fluctuaciones de la demanda han exacerbado las distorsiones de una relación laboral asimétrica no regulada fuera de la relación laboral estándar. Se observan estrategias de adaptación de lealtad, voz y lealtad hibridadas, y salida, según la tipología de Hirschman. La elección de esas estrategias se explica según los niveles de acceso a recursos propios e institucionales, así como por las experiencias y repertorios simbólicos de las y los trabajadores.
RésuméLes auteurs analysent les répercussions de la pandémie de COVID‐19 sur l'activité et le vécu des travailleurs de plateforme en Pologne et la réaction de cette main‐d'œuvre dans ces circonstances particulières. Ils observent que les fortes fluctuations de la demande ont exacerbé les distorsions propres à une relation de travail asymétrique, non régulée et atypique et repèrent plusieurs stratégies mobilisées par les travailleurs pour y remédier, en s'appuyant sur la typologie de Hirschman (défection, prise de parole et loyauté). Le choix entre ces stratégies dépend des ressources personnelles de l'individu, des moyens institutionnels auxquels il a accès et de son système de valeurs.
AbstractThis article explores how the COVID‐19 pandemic has affected platform workers' work and life experiences in Poland and how they have responded. These workers have been exposed to substantial fluctuations in demand during the pandemic, magnifying the distortions existing in an unregulated asymmetrical employment relationship that diverges from the standard employment relationship. Findings illustrate how workers have attempted to reduce the disruptions underpinning this relationship by adopting different strategies, which resemble Hirschman's typology of exit, voice and loyalty. The authors explain workers' choice of strategy by different levels of access to resources and institutional capabilities, as well as by variations in workers' orientations.
