Food is becoming more and more an urban issue. This paper aims to explore the complex relationships between food systems and urban areas, trying to de ne the potential role of geography in studying these relationships and supporting urban food policies. The rst part of the contribution explores the characteristics and the scales of food systems in urban areas, posing questions about the existence of «local food systems» and about their relationships with global food networks and ows. The following paragraphs are focused on cities as spaces of action for food policies, de ning the eld of urban food polices and urban food strategies, in an international perspective. The last part of the paper re ects on the role of the geographical approach in contributing to the debate on urban food systems and in supporting food policies.

Within the framework of the international debate focusing on experiences emerg- ing from cities in the global North, this paper aims to explore urban food policies under the lens of a global South perspective, paying particular attention to African cities and taking into account the common elements they present –compared with other urban contexts and terri- tories – but also the speci cities with respect to the process of urbanization and the linkages existing amongst cities and food. Under this light, urban food policies in an African context are also placed, on the one side, into a path speci ed by a number of keywords such as food and nutrition security, self-suf ciency and food sovereignty; on the other, they are positioned in a context of internationalization of re ections and actions culminated in the New Urban Agenda and the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact. The prospect of urban food policies is nally presented as an inspiring and propelling opportunity for new forms of territorial partnerships.

In recent years multiple studies and insights have been published on food systems, which have seen the proposal of a plurality of paradigms for the analysis and planning of territorial food systems. The objective of this paper is to perform a reconnaissance and systematisation of different theoretical and operational approaches that encode the relation- ship between space and food system and that are, or could be, used for an urban or local food policy. To this end, starting from a more general and abstract idea on the spaces of food, in their general and metaphoric valences, we discuss in depth the main approaches to the spatial processing of the food system found in literature and in the experiences of urban food plan- ning, thus considering their developments and reciprocal hybridisations. Finally, a theoretical and operational de nition of local territorial food system territorial will be provided, as an assumption and at the same time as the outcome of the reasoning and action for an integrated project and a local food policy.

Avec ce chapitre on cherche d'interpréter le riche débat scientifique et politique concernant les différents paradigmes du système alimentaire à la lumière de la notion de proximité, considéré dans ses différentes dimensions, qui émerge comme catégorie analytique largement utilisé dans ce domaine. En se référant, avec prudence, au contraste entre les systèmes alimentaires conventionnels et les géographies alternatives de la alimentation, on peut observer que les premiers sont généralement décrits à partir de la constatation d'une réduction de la proximité entre producteurs et consommateurs, entre les étapes de la chaîne d'approvisionnement, entre les espaces de production et de consommation, entre les acteurs du système, etc. (Morgan et al, 2006). Les géographies alternatives, cependant, sont dans la plupart des cas définies par des catégories analytiques et descriptives, qui se réfèrent à une augmentation de la proximité entre les nœuds du system alimentaire (Morgan et al. 2006). Pour affronter ces questions, on a cherché à ne pas tomber dans deux simplifications très diffusés dans un champ où on confond souvent la voix analytique du chercheur avec celle du militant politique. La première simplification regarde une trop simple opposition entre local et global, qui ne donne pas la valeur nécessaire à l'hétérogénéité des lieux (Ward et al. 1997), ni à l'importance de considérer les niveaux territoriaux – et surtout une échelle typiquement «fluides» comme le niveau local – comme les produits de la société, des politiques et de l'agir territorial des acteurs (Hinrichs 2003). La seconde simplification est celle d'une division trop claire entre un système alimentaire conventionnel, capitaliste et fortement mondialisé et les pratiques alternatives, enracinée dans des territoires spécifiques, dans lesquels on cherche de s'opposer localement aux forces de la mondialisation. En fait, les deux catégories sont loin d'être définies et la frontière entre les systèmes alimentaires conventionnels et les réseaux alternatives est parfois fluide, aussi dans le même territoire (Morgan et al, 2006 ; Sonnino et al. 2006). On choit donc de utiliser l'approche critique suggérée par DuPuis et Goodman (2005) dans l'étude des systèmes alimentaires locaux, - qui se réfèrent à Amin (2002) en évoquant la nécessaire prise de conscience d'une dimension politique du local, fondé sur le pouvoir des relations de proximité même dans un contexte des relations globalisées entre les acteurs et les lieux, et dans le local, à partir de la prise de conscience de la juxtaposition des politiques de différentes échelles dans les mêmes territoires. Ici on concentre sur la politique dans le local, tout en étant est conscient de l'importance du local comme échelle produite par l'action et les stratégies des acteurs, et ce même dans le domaine des politiques et stratégies alimentaires.

In recent years, Alternative Food Networks (AFNs) have been a key issue both in the scientific community and in public debates. This is due to their profound implications for rural development, local sustainability, and bio-economics. This edited collection discusses what the main determinants of the participation of operators - both consumers and producers - in AFNs are, what the conditions for their sustainability are, what their social and environmental effects are, and how they are distributed geographically. Further discussions include the effect of AFNs in structuring the food chain and how AFNs can be successfully scaled up. The authors explicitly take an interdisciplinary approach to analyse AFNs from different perspectives, using as an example the Italian region of Piedmont, a particularly interesting case study due to the diffusion of AFNs in the area, as well as due to the fact that it was in this region that the 'Slow Food' movement originated.
