This paper explores the evolution of national planning in Brazil over the last ninety years. Whereas the initial import-substitution industrialization in the country focused too narrowly upon specific sites, later export-led industrialization has attended only to the global market. The former was more attentive to the immediate environment, while the latter is becoming more attentive to the world. However, the conceptualization of national planning processes must simultaneously recognize the dynamics of the economy at community, regional, national, continental, and global scales. After nearly nine full decades of promoting the positivistic search for political order and the dream of economic progress, the institutionalized national planning process of Brazil has evolved. That evolution is summarized here.

This book examines the efforts of the French-speaking minority in Flanders, Belgium, to maintain a legal and social presence of the French language in Flemish public life. Chronologically, the study is bookended by two developments, almost exactly a century apart. In 1873, the first laws were passed which required the use of Dutch in some aspects of public administration in Flanders, challenging the de facto use of French among the Flemish ruling class. One hundred and one years later, the last French daily newspaper in Flanders collapsed, marking the end of a once-vibrant French-language public sphere in Flanders. The author contends that the methods and arguments by which French speakers defended the role of French in Flemish public life changed along with the social and political situation of this minority. As the Flemish movement grew over the course of the twentieth century, French speakers' appeals to the "free choice" of language lost traction, and they put forward claims that they represented an ethnolinguistic minority who deserved protection for their mother tongue. Providing new insights for scholars of European history, and in conversation with the literature on liberalism, national identity, and Francophonie, this book demonstrates how the debate over the role of French in Flanders was at the center of Belgium's ethnolinguistic conflict - the repercussions of which continue to be felt to this day

"In recent decades there has been many attempts to describe, explore and explain the new 'post-modern' capitalism of the 21st century. In this context, this book looks at one of the most exciting strands of this research in the late twentieth century: the flexible specialisation research programme. Drawing on the history of ideas, discourse, and literature on capitalism of the last four decades, the book shows that although 'flexible specialization' anticipated some of the ways in which capitalism was being transformed in the late twentieth century, they underestimated and failed to anticipate the forms of 'creative destruction' and corporate digital control which were becoming embedded in the global capitalist accumulation dynamic itself. The sudden disappearance of the Soviet Union and the 'end of history' failed to open-up the pathway for new forms of modern social democracy but gave rise instead to the new digital Behemoths. Today, the classical tendencies of capitalism as anticipated by Marx are all too present and, despite talk of post-capitalism' and 'digital/techno-feudalism', the landscape of monopoly-finance capital has consolidated itself. The book counterposes the flexible specialisation research programme (FSRP) with the various Marxist interpretation of the capitalist transition, together with the wider social and economic theories that emerged in the first decades for the twenty-first century around, for example, the 'great acceleration', de-growth, and post-growth. This book will be of interest to all readers concerned with both heterodox political economy, critical social theory, intellectual history and, above all, the prospects for social transformation leading to social justice and an 'egalitarian enlightenment'"--

"Personal Identification: Modern Development and Security Implications, Second Edition explains how Personal Identification-and Real ID-became part of the American fabric along with their past century's historical ID development. The development of the "trusted and secure" personal identification documents began with passports and has continued as social changes made IDs more essential. This book describes the convergence of technologies and hundreds of patents that produced our "trusted and secure" documents and IDs from our past right up through to today. Personal Identification Documents (IDs) and the societal need for "trusted" identification by the public is a relatively new social phenomenon. In 1900, most people did not need or have any IDs until passports, with a photograph of the individual, became mandatory when Great Britain entered World War I in 1914. In the U.S., the state-issued driver's license is probably the only trusted ID in one's wallet today, but they became "trusted and secure" documents only recently with the requirement for Real ID.
