6 page handwritten letter, numbered 1-7 (page 6 missing), clipped printings from a book or article included with the letter. ; This letter is believed to be a handwritten draft copy of the original letter, in the handwriting of Varina Davis (wife of Jefferson Davis), with Jefferson Davis' signature, interspersed with printed excerpts which look like galley proofs from Davis' memoir, Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government, Vol. 1, pages 449-52 (published 1881). The proofreading corrections in dark ink, not Davis' handwriting, are in the book, while Davis' own additions--in the margins of pages 3, 4, and 5--appear in the Southern Historical Society Papers version of this letter (Southern Historical Society Papers, Vol. 34, 1906, "Some War History Never Published: Famous Conference at Centerville . . . Mr. Davis's Version of It."). Davis is defending decisions made during the war, apparently written in a paper sent to him by Wright. Wright was the agent for the Confederate archives from 1876-1917. The location of the original letter is unknown.
