"The book aims rethinking the cultural history of Mediterranean nationalisms between 19th and 20th centuries by tracing their specific approach to antiquity in the forging of a national past. By focusing on how national imaginaries dealt with this topic and how history and archaeology relied on antiquity, this collection of essays introduces a comparative approach presenting several cases studies concerning many regions including Spain, Italy and Slovenia as well as Albania, Greece and Turkey. By adopting the perspective of a dialogue among all these Mediterranean political cultures, this book breaks significantly new ground, because it shifts attention on how Southern Europe nationalisms are an interconnected political and cultural experience, directly related to the intellectual examples of Northern Europe, but also developing its own particular trends. Contributors are: Çiğdem Atakuman, Filippo Carlà, Francisco Garcia Alonso, Maja Gori, Eleni Stefanou, Rok Stergar, Katia Visconti"--Provided by publisher

With Italy under Napoleonic rule at the beginning of the nineteenth century, the antiquarian topic of anti-romanism became a pillar of the Italian nation-building process and, in turn, was used against the dominant French culture. The history of the Italian nation predating the Roman Empire supported the idea of an Italian cultural primacy and proved crucial in the creation of modern Italian nationalism. Towards the end of the nineteenth century, Italian studies of Roman history would drape a dark veil over the earliest history of Italy while Fascism openly claimed the legacy of the Roman Empire. Italic antiquity would, however, remain alive through all those years, intersecting with the political and cultural life of modern Italy

International audience ; In the last decade of the 18th century, translations were very useful in order to spread new revolutionary ideas and to build up a new political language. Among the first works to be translated in France after 1789 were the canonical texts of the American politics John Adams' Defence and the Federalist by Hamilton, Madison and Jay. Both were published in the first half of 1792 by the Parisian publisher Buisson. Namely the Federalist enjoyed a considerable success because the same translation was later represented in 1795, during the time of the constitutional debates regarding the institutional form of government for the newly French Republic. However, the translation was not a paean for the republican cause, because it was carried out by the Lafayette entourage who, even in 1792, deemed it possible to blend the American model with the monarchical form. A detailed study of the translation suggests how it was the work of several men, very different from each other with respect to their approach to the new political language. These differences are confirmed, for example, by the various translations of the same original expression "federal government" and they suggest that the revolutionary years were decisive in order to create a new political language.

"The new Atlantic history has hitherto focused predominantly on the British Atlantic Empire. This volume, by contrast, explores intellectual history and political processes during the final democratic revolutions of the eighteenth century, while questioning the centrality of the area ruled over by Britain and America. It re-examines the role played by continental Europe and the connections between various national cultures. Rethinking the Atlantic World shows how ideas rebounded across the Atlantic, how they were received, and how they combined and gave rise to new ideas and new political action. Consequently, it places the French Revolution firmly at the heart of Atlantic history, but from a perspective which transcends the ideological limits imposed by twentieth-century debate."--BOOK JACKET
