This paper reflects on political definition and cultural interaction in Sicily in the second half of the fourth century. The Timoleonte's action has a strong ideological attitude (Greeks vs others), but In the same period Sicily has a positive process of osmosis involving all the communities (Greek and not-Greek) in the island, ; In questo contributo si propone una riflessione sulle diverse logiche che governano la definizione politico territoriale da un lato e l'interazione culturale dal'altro nella Sicilia della seconda metà del IV secolo.
In this paper I dwell on the relation between genos and possession of land in the definition of colonial aristocracy. Since even in the colonies, the possession of land determines the social pyramid, it is interesting to see whether and how the familiar identity can determine the possession of land in the colonial history through the experiences of re-foundation, colonial reinforcements or internal political crisis. From a Aristotelian suggestion and from an enlarged (both chronologically and geographically) notion of colonization, I take into account some significant cases, and in particular Sybaris / Turi, Cyrene, Naupaktos, Imera and Lumbarda. They allow you to recognize the signs of social dialectics among the first settlers and the subsequent reinforcements just in the division and in the management of the land, highlighting a sort of criterion of 'birthright' in the definition of the social body. In this contexts we see the tension between an isonomic attitude and elements of aristocratic nature.
; Plutarch's Dion is the Plato's good disciple, but the tradition on Dion shows more contra- dictory aspects and his political attitude towards tyranny and democracy. After the Athen- ian years and the return to Syracuse, he isn't in line with the philosophers of the Acdemia; the murder of the democratic Herakleides starts the season of violence in Syracuse and Dione is assassinated by the mercenaries of Callippus of Athens. These deaths highlight the problem of the elimination of a political opponent outside the rules of justice: some of the clues offered by ancient tradition can also be read in the light of some epigraphic docu- ments showing the legal and ritual disposals to overcome the stasis in the classical polis.
; The nature of eugeneia becomes an interesting philosophical topic from the sophist thought onwards: we can follow some traces of this debate thanks to the surviving fragments of Aristotle's dialogue 'On Nobility'. Search of a correct definition of eugeneia highlights ethical, political, historical implications of this theme. Some authors (Euripides and Theognis) allows us to understand the graduale disintegration of the archaic aristocracy including wealth, education, birth. Herodotus confirms historical aspects, like the excellence of individuals and social groups, and the importance of chronos (the time). In the Aristotle's definition eugeneia is the 'arete (virtue) of the genos', i.e. the ability to generate excellent individuals from excellent origin: time and generations are the best guarantee for the genuine eugeneia 'good birth'.
