In Eritrea's war for national independence, the right of self-determination held center stage & remains an unclear issue: how will decisions be made, how will the nation be represented, & how will the diversity of the new country be incorporated into a singular self? While attempting to answer these questions, the People's Front for Democracy & Justice -- a reconstructed, peacetime version of the old Eritrean People's Liberation Front -- must also address a variety of religious, economic, ecological, linguistic, & cultural issues. The gains made thus far are significant, but a more extensive regime of rights is necessary if this multicultural society is to survive & prosper. M. Maguire
