This paper stresses on the importance of interdisciplarity for the understanding of characteristics linked to fire. After a short review of the methods that were used in our studies, we present a comparative study of firing colours, using the Munsell colour code & micromorphological characteristics. It is thereby attempted to distinguish & understand different types & degrees of burning for a pedologically homogeneous area, the decalcified less of Middle Belgium. As an example, we present a medieval rural site that is rich in this type of pedo-sedimentary data linked to the use of fire. Experimental firing structures are also discussed. Based on these results, we propose a checklist of recurrent & diagnostic firing characteristics for future characterisations that would facilitate the differentiation of past activities linked to domestic ovens & hearths. 36 Figures, 62 References.
