AbstractHow has the ability to express reflexivity, including regulating affect, come to be part of the bundled self that workers are required to be? This paper offers a rigorous genealogical analysis of the multiple histories of knowledge and power that have informed the emergence and shaping of 'reflexive registers,' or socially typified ways of speaking and reflecting about oneself that stand for morally marked models of selfhood. It takes as a starting-point programs documented in my ethnography of employability programs in London, UK where workers of all sorts are asked to learn to examine their personalities and to express their feelings. It then draws on original historiographical and ethnographic data that allows documentation of the logics and circumstances informing the emergence and development of reflexivity as a resource for employability. It argues for an interdisciplinary understanding of reflexivity and its communicability that theorises the workers as products of history, capital, and affect.

The European Union and the Italian state have currently implemented a state infrastructure enabling to govern the migration flows towards Europe. This infrastructure has involved the formation of an ensemble of institutions, procedures, analyses and reflections that raise the efficiency of migrants' reception, integration or expulsion. Expertise on intercultural communication has been celebrated as a key resource of this infrastructure. In this article, I discuss the status of expertise on intercultural communication within an infrastructure managing migration in Italy. I focus on the circumstances by which expertise on intercultural communication has emerged as a crucial technology of this infrastructure and on ways this knowledge contributes to the regulation of migrants' access to the life projects migration stands for.

Diese Dissertation analysiert die Effekte des Spätkapitalismus für die Art wie die Schweiz in die nationale Mehrsprachigkeit investiert. Durch eine genealogische soziolinguistische Analyse von Regierungsdiskursen über die Promotion der Schweiz im Ausland, die zwischen 1970 und 2008 produziert wurden, und auf der Basis von institutionellen Texten erforsche ich die diskursive Konstruktion von Schweizer Mehrsprachigkeit als ein Promotionsargument und analysiere wie und warum die Schweizer Kapitalisierung auf Mehrsprachigkeit sich in der Zeit verändert. Ich diskutiere zudem, wie die Schweizer Mehrsprachigkeit durch Regierungsakteure instrumentalisiert wird, um die Schweizer Wirtschaft und Kultur, sowie den nationalen Tourismus global zu positionieren. In diesem Zusammenhang zeige ich, wie Mehrsprachigkeit als eine Form von "added value" konstruiert wird, um die Wettbewerbsfähigkeit des Landes zu garantieren in einem sich verändernden politisch-ökonomischen Umfeld, das durch eine Deregulierung der Märkte, die Transnationalisierung der Wirtschaft und eine zunehmende Konkurrenz zwischen den Ländern charakterisiert ist. Meine Analyse zeigt auch, dass der Promotionswert von Mehrsprachigkeit, sowie die Art wie diese kulturelle Ressource von den Akteuren im Feld konzeptualisiert wird, nicht konstant ist, sondern von den politischen und ökonomischen Interessen ebendieser Akteure abhängt. Schliesslich zeigt meine Analyse, dass dieser sich verändernde Wert von Mehrsprachigkeit weder im Bruch steht mit einer Ideologie der nationalen Mehrsprachigkeit, die auf Standard, Ethnizität und Stabilität basiert; noch mit der Art und Weise wie Sprache instrumentalisiert wird, um soziokulturelle Differenz zu legitimieren. Diese Diskurse über die Promotion der Schweiz im Ausland und insbesondere die beobachtete Kapitalisierung auf Mehrsprachigkeit scheinen vielmehr altbekannte Ideologien der Nation zu reproduzieren sowie die politischen und ökonomischen Interessen, welche sich hinter diesen Ideologien verbergen.

Abstract
This special issue contributes to scholarship on language and affective economy by exploring the role played by affect in shaping work and workers under current configurations of capitalism. We take as a starting point the observation of increased valorisation and instrumentalisation of affect in the contemporary phase of capitalism. In this editorial introduction to the special issue, we set the scene by first outlining our questions, aims and objectives. Subsequently, we situate the contribution made by this issue in a larger social theorisation of affect and capitalism, particularly the notion of affective capitalism, and reflect on how this theorisation can contribute to sociolinguistic scholarship on work. The introduction concludes with an outline of the articles in this special issue, highlighting the way, empirically and conceptually, each article contributes to our understanding of the intersections between language, work and affective capitalism.

Abstract
In this article, we explore the imbrication of service work with consumer markets and larger structures of inequality, including gender and class divides as well as social and economic differences. In line with current sociolinguistic scholarship on language and work, we are interested in the activity of serving people – both in the sense of being or becoming people who serve as well as in the practice of providing services to people. To do so, we offer an ethnographic account of the regime of labor surveillance as well as the daily work practices of female workers at a Starbucks coffeehouse in London, UK. We wonder about how employers organize the bodies of workers into signs, codes and messages that appeal to customers' class expectations of this type of consumption. By documenting the regimentation and surveillance of labor at Starbucks, we inquire into the prescribed rules that guide 'proper' presentations of physicality; further, we ask questions about the mechanism through which the body at Starbucks is made to express its positioning within a structure of labor and its relationality to others, especially customers.

Against a background of the ongoing crisis of global capitalism and the fracturing of the neoliberal project, this book provides a detailed account of the ways in which language is profoundly imbricated in the neoliberalising of the fabric of social life. With chapters from a cast list of international scholars covering topics such as the commodification of education and language, unemployment, and the governmentality of the self, and discussion chapters from Monica Heller and Jackie Urla bringing the various strands together, the book ultimately helps us to understand how language is part of political economy and the everyday making and remaking of society and individuals. It provides both a theoretical framework and a significant methodological "tool-box" to critically detect, understand, and resistthe impact of neoliberalism on everyday social spheres, particularly in relation to language. Presenting richly empirical studies that expand our understanding of how neoliberalism as a regime of truth and as a practice of governance performs within the terrain of language, this book is an essential resource for researchers and graduate students in English language, sociolinguistics, applied linguistics, linguistic anthropology, and related areas.

This edited volume presents an empirical account of how neoliberal ideas are adopted on the ground by different actors in different educational settings, from bilingual education in the US, to migrant work programmes in Italy, to minority language teaching in Mexico. It examines language and education as objects of neoliberalization and as powerful tools and sites through which ideological principles underpinning neoliberal societies and economies are (re)produced and maintained (and with that, inequality and exclusion). This book aims to produce a complex understanding of how neoliberal rationalities are articulated within locally anchored and historical regimes of knowledge on language, education and society.

Die Stellung von Subjekt und Akteur im Diskurs gehört zu den zentralen Problemen der Diskurstheorie. Der folgende Dialog dreht sich um die Schülerin Sarah, die sich mit ihren LehrerInnen (Szene 1), Eltern (Szene 2) und FreundInnen (Szene 3) über die Frage diskursiver Agency auseinandersetzt. Dabei wird sie mit strukturalistischen und poststrukturalistischen sowie pragmatisch-interaktionalen Perspektiven zur Frage konfrontiert, inwiefern Subjekte Diskurse produzieren oder umgekehrt Diskurse Subjekte hervorbringen. Der Dialog greift auf theoretische Positionen in den Sozial- und Sprachwissenschaften zurück, die in Gestalt fiktiver Personen performativ dargestellt und in Beziehung gesetzt werden. Dabei geht es um fundamentale Fragen der Diskurstheorie wie etwa: Wie ist sozialer Sinn zu sehen – als das Produkt einer Grammatik, die von den DiskursteilnehmerInnen ausgeführt wird, oder als das Produkt ihrer kreativen Praxis? Agiert das Subjekt als eine vernunft- bzw. wissensgeleitete Handlungsinstanz oder stellt es eine Illusion innerer Einheit dar, die in kontingenten diskursiven Akten vernäht wird? Inwiefern wird es zum Objekt hegemonialer Praktiken, die auf die Konstruktion einer sozialer Ordnung oder einer Sprachideologie zielen? Die zentrale Figur ist die siebzehnjährige Sarah, die als Tochter eines marokkanischen Vaters und einer deutschen Mutter in einem Gymnasium zwei Leistungskurse in Deutsch und Sozialwissenschaften besucht. Sie sieht sich auf Grund ihrer ungezügelten Intelligenz, ihrer rebellischen Art und ihrer interkulturellen Biographie in ihrer Schule tendenziell als eine Außenseiterin. In der Schule hat sie mit LehrerInnen "aus altem Schrot und Korn" zu tun. Mit ihren top-down pädagogischen Methoden stehen diese für ältere strukturalistische Tendenzen in der Soziologie und Linguistik. Ihre Eltern dagegen, die die pragmatisch-interaktionistische Wende in diesen Disziplinen personifizieren, sind von dem liberalen und kritischen Geist der 1970er Jahre getragen.
