Uncertainty in History
In history, the idea of uncertainty has taken on many forms, both in the methodological field, with for example the definition of historical sources as traces, and in epistemological terms, with the major question of causality or even ontological with the infinite extension of the "historian's territory". Nevertheless, more than an operative notion perhaps, it has long remained as an invariant, a kind of epistemological madguard (a "residue" according to the term adopted by Marc Bloch) of historical knowledge. The question of the historicization of the idea of uncertainty in the historical discipline is related to the place assigned to it in the epistemology of historians, always in tension with the desire for scientificity and truth that has long structured the disciplinarization and professionalization of history. Where do we place the cursor between uncertainty and truth for historical knowledge? This could be the guiding question to periodize the place of the idea of uncertainty in history and roughly distinguish after a predominantly scientist phase linked to the professionalization of the historical discipline (19th-first 20th century), a phase of doubts about history's ability to tell the truth, which became clear at the end of the 1970s and could conveniently be characterized as the great reversal of uncertainty in history, which, from an embarrassing limitation to reducing as much as possible, became an operating principle for defatalising history. However, it will be necessary to question this periodization, more or less modelled on the general evolutions of the sciences, marked in particular by the rise in power of probabilistic and indeterministic approaches and more or less directly related to what is perceived by the majority as the rise of uncertainty in the historical world itself ; this will require taking into account another level of analysis that adds to the weight of uncertainty in history, the moral and political dimension around the question of the social function of history.

The aim of this article is to analyze the work of the event's relative desingularisation that Ricœur operates by coupling with the narrative in Time and Narrative in the early 1980s, then the re-opening of the question of the singularity and uniqueness of the event in Memory, History, Forgetting (in 2000) in the reconstructed theoretical frame of historical representation put to the test of the "event at the limits" which is the Shoah. In Time and Narrative Ricœur intends to transcend, through the interweaving of history and fiction applied to founding events of collective identity like the Shoah, the epistemological aporia of the dichotomy between a history which dissolves the event in the explanation and a purely emotional attitude in the face of events of considerable ethical intensity. However, this narrativisation of the event runs up against the traumatic power of the radical extra-textual of the event — the Shoah, which thus constitutes a challenge for the historical representation of the past. It is this question that Ricœur takes up in Memory, History, Forgetting, but this time the investigation has been largely reconfigured by the dialectic of memory and history, contributing to the representation of the past. While distinguishing the absolute moral incomparability of the Shoah and the incomparability relative to the historiographical plane (i.e., possible comparability), Ricœur maintains that the entanglement between historiographical judgment and moral judgment is inevitable, thus opening up the great question of the social, political and ethical responsibility of the historian.

A Pedagogical Turn in French Teacher Training The Case of the History and Geography CAPES
In: Annales: histoire, sciences sociales. English Edition, Band 70, Heft 1, S. 185-197
ISSN: 2268-3763
Abstract
The "scientific" and "educational" questions raised by the relationship between research and the teaching of history have returned to the spotlight with the current reform of teacher training in France. Undertaken as part of the "Refounding the School System" project initiated in 2012 by minister of education Vincent Peillon, this reform accords a central place to pedagogical approaches and "professionalization." This article analyzes some of the issues at stake in this "pedagogical turn" for the training of history and geography teachers, particularly with regard to renewed questions about the social function of history and the recurrent challenges and reservations on the part of academic historians about binding the notions of "scientific" and "educational" together.
In: Annales: histoire, sciences sociales, Band 70, Heft 1, S. 191-203
ISSN: 1953-8146
In: Espaces Temps, Band 84, Heft 1, S. 106-119

In: Espaces Temps, Band 64, Heft 1, S. 63-68

In: Espaces Temps, Band 59, Heft 1, S. 86-111
The article puts forward an interpretative and h istorizing framework, for the "Critical turning " of the Annales at the end of the eighties , and singles out two moments of this turning. The first has constituted a reassuring answer on the identity of a community of research workers whose scientific legitimacy had been challenged. In the early nineties, the "Critical turning" was in the process of becoming stabilized with the proposition of a new historiographical model built around the pragmatic paradigm, and with the use, in particular, of "city" sociology (Boltanski and Thévenot) and convention economy in the theoretical propositions. This paradigmatic crystallization, which is still in progress, is in keeping with a historiographical state of affairs which has long been marked by the existence of other strong historiographical models, and the end of the theoretical and institutional hegemony of the Annales. The author proposes to end by having recourse to the work of Hilary Putnam and the notion of internal realism, so as to maintain the aim of truth in History in contrast to relativism.
