This article opens by situating the Yugoslav academic perspectives on class and politics within the framework of recent studies dealing with class in post-socialist Europe. It then presents the ways in which the first Yugoslav dissidents understood the "new class" (the embourgeoisement of the party elite), followed by a review of a large number of studies on the disintegration of workers' self-management project, students' protests, and workers' strikes. The diverse scope of research conducted between the 1960s and 1980s provided a corrective to the League of Communists' hegemonic perceptions of the growing social inequalities, the causes of the economic crisis, and the stalemates of political decision-making, showing the deepening, while "invisible," sense of powerlessness among workers and the opaqueness of the polycentric, increasingly fragmenting and clashing centers of political power. In the conclusions, changes in the perceptions of class in post-Yugoslav states are discussed.

This paper examines the main features of the non-governmental sector in Kosovo engaged in peace building and multi-ethnic coexistence. It seeks to answer the question why this Western-designed civil society sector, well integrated in the flows of the transnational aid industry, has not so far developed significant leverage against the dominant ethno-nationalist politics in Kosovo. It argues that the main problem of this civil society segment-its lack of capacity to engage in defending and legitimizing the peace-building agenda-results from an incomplete analysis of local civil society in Kosovo before 1999. It also arises from the tendency in transnationally exported defintions of the practices of a 'good' civil society to neglect the limits imposed by the local context where, as in Kosovo, the parameters of state sovereignty are based on ethnic homogeneity and segregation. The paper concludes by proposing that plans for Western-style multiculturalism as a programme to stabilize Kosovo may inadvertently perpetuate nationalist (ethno-centred) state building agendas. L'incorporation de drapeaux nationaux dans l'art visuel contemporain sert souvent à évoquer une relation tendue entre les individus, la nation et l'État. Les artistes espèrent que le malaise des spectateurs qui observent ces œuvres d'art politiques alimentera le débat sur ceux qui agissent « au nom » de la nation. Ils confrontent les spectateurs à leur propre position vis-à-vis des drapeaux et leur rappellent l'omniprésence constante du nationalisme dans le monde. Les œuvres d'art évoquées subvertissent le drapeau national, mais elles confirment également son importance en tant que point de convergence de l'action politique.
