Challenges the "West was violent" historical scholarship, asserting that 19th-century civil society of the US West was far more peaceful than contemporary US cities, &, in fact, not very violent at all. It is contended that the late-19th-century culture of violence was generated almost entirely by US government military intervention with respect to Plains Indians. In turn, this intervention is linked to the government-subsidized transcontinental railroad corporations.
