Some 1936-68 trend data on class differences in voting behavior that were presented earlier (see SA 0925/H0064) are extended through the 1972 presidential election. Major focus is on Gallup poll results for blue-collar & white-collar Republican voters in the South & non-South. On the whole, differences between the classes decreased in 1972, but when South & non-South differences are compared, the decrease in the former appears of a greater magnitude than that of the latter. Even earlier patterns of age variation in class differences did not persist in the South, as they did in the non-South. Several explanations are suggested, including differences in the presidential candidates, but a conservative party image which appeals to both classes seems to be the most attractive. 2 Tables. J. N. Mayer.
