This article discusses some of the stakes of regional security at play in the Mediterranean. It focuses particularly on the objectives of radical Islam, & explains that the will of Islamic fundamentalism is not to much to crush the West or convert it to Islam so much as it is to remove western interest from the Arab world so that Islamic rulers can have absolute control over the region. This conflict, asymmetrical in nature, calls social, economic, & human links promoted by the Barcelona Process into question. The political demands of Islamic fundamentalism oppose too many aspects that currently make up the reality of connections throughout the Mediterranean region. These socio-economic facets of the region could not be overturned without a major crisis; negotiating a political share of the region that meets some of the demands of both sides of the conflict will constitute a major challenge for the many countries involved in the Process.
