We are surrounded by thousands of animals, alive and dead. They are an intimate and ever-present part of our human lives. As a society, we privilege veterinarians as experts on these animals: they are our educators and teachers in what they say, what they do, and the decisions that they make. Yet, within the field of education, there is little research on the curriculum, pedagogy, and experiences of veterinary school and students. What do veterinarians learn in veterinary school? How do their experiences during those four years shape their perceptions of animals? How do the structures, curriculum, and pedagogy of veterinary college create and influence these experiences? Learning Animals opens up this conversation through an exploration of the complicated, fascinating and often painful stories of a cohort of veterinary students as they make their four-year journey from matriculation through graduation. The book examines how the experiences of veterinary students shape how humans relate to animals, from public policy and decision-making about the environment and animals slaughtered for food, to the most personal decisions about euthanizing companion animals. The first full-length, critical, qualitative study of the perspectives of our primary teachers about animals, this will be a thought-provoking read for those in the fields of both educational research and veterinary education.

In this essay, I reflect on what I learned about human–animal relationships, families, and community through volunteering at an animal shelter, and how I translated these insights into founding a nonprofit community organization, Animal Advocates of Greater Lafayette (AAGL). I first discuss the increasing research and scholarship in the social work field that examines the role of pets in human lives. I describe my methodological frame, drawing on the fields of autoethnography and personal narrative in qualitative research. I then relate both animal and human stories from the field (in this case, an animal shelter), and tell the story of the founding and current activities of AAGL. In conclusion, I suggest that AAGL, as a community organization, models how to rethink families through a multispecies lens.

In this essay, I explore my story as an activist and my current critical community engagement project, Animal Advocates of Greater Lafayette. Animal Advocates merges my activism and my scholarship. I begin by providing stories of my experience as a student and community activist in Boston in the 1980s. I then discuss my more recent volunteer experiences, which led to the formation of Animal Advocates of Greater Lafayette. I share stories of the early challenges and my experiences with this group and how my activism and my scholarship now simultaneously shape and move each other. Through this discussion, I hope to expand the possibilities for being and acting in the world outside of the academy to engage with the communities where we live, thinking about the multiple ways in which justice matters in critical times.

Die Verfasserin analysiert die wirtschaftlichen und die politischen Aspekte der Situation der Jugend unter den Bedingungen der Globalisierung. Ihr zentrales Interesse besteht darin, mit Hilfe von Bildung Orientierung und berufliche Chancen in der globalen Welt zu gewinnen. Dabei stellt die Autorin fest, dass lediglich für einen kleinen Anteil der jungen Menschen die Globalisierung tatsächlich Vorteile bietet. Große Gruppen junger Leute aus der sog. Mittelschicht sehen keine berufliche Perspektive und haben Angst vor der Zukunft. Die Forscher diagnostizieren zunehmende Marginalisierungstendenzen der Post-Google-Generation. Vor diesem Hintergrund werden diverse Merkmale der Untersuchungen über Jugendkultur und -politik thematisiert, die nach der Meinung der Verfasserin der Jugend helfen sollen, den Herausforderungen der Globalisierung zu begegnen. Die Autorin plädiert für eine globale Orientierung der Jugendforschung und -politik. Darüber hinaus soll die Forschung gezielt die Bedürfnisse, die Erwartungen und die Probleme dieser Generation sowie ihre interne Differenzierung analytisch rekonstruieren. (ICF)
