The Younghusband Committee on the Local Authority Health & Welfare services has cut its way through the jungle of services & has concluded that soc work faces much the same problems in all fields & requires much the same aptitudes & training. The Report proposes the unification of recruitment & training of soc workers, & division of the profession into 3 horizontal categories according to skill & complexity of work. The most obvious implication of the Report is that soc workers must be trained, & that professional training must be provided by the local authorities & soc services themselves. Another implication is that if the recommendations contained in the Report are accepted, soc services beyond those provided by local authorities cannot be insulated from their efforts as the courses & National Certificate envisaged by the Committee will have a wide appeal to other soc workers. Many of the Committee's recommendations will be disputed & most of the disputes will be productive, for the Committee has focused attention on big issues. IPSA.
