Analysis of 1987/88 survey data obtained from 3,158 high school students in San Francisco, CA, are used to examine the relation of familism to academic achievement among Mexican origin vs Anglo adolescents, drawing on James S. Coleman's social capital argument (see SA 36:5/88T9212). Findings challenge the dominant myth that academic achievement is obstructed by collective orientations, & show that, under conditions of higher parental education, familism helps educational achievement among Mexican origin youth. It is concluded that familistic attitudes are a form of social capital important to academic success. 6 Tables, 37 References. Adapted form the source document.
