This essay delineates the causes and the consequences of Indian and Pakistani nuclear tests in May of 1998 in a global context. In this connection, the central role of dispute over Kashmir as a triggering issue in the recent Indian and Pakistani arms race is analyzed. The essay also critically examines the inconsistencies in major powers' response toward nuclear proliferation in South Asia as compared to other parts of the world and expounds on the future prospects and the global impact of Indian and Pakistani nuclear arms trade.
