Pericopsis elata (Fabaceae) is a valuable timber species occurring in moist semi-deciduous African forests. While it is at present substantially reduced, the tree's natural distribution previously covered several distinct areas from Côte d'Ivoire to the Democratic Republic of Congo. This species has been logged since the second half of the 20th century. Because it suffers from a lack of regeneration, P. elata is now included in CITES Appendix II and is recorded as "Endangered A1cd" on the IUCN Red List. As with other long-lived light-demanding species, the survival of P. elata may have been favored by important disturbances that occurred in the Congo Basin during the last millennia. While both international trade and industrial uses of the wood of P. elata are well documented, information about its ecology are very sparse or contradictory, and even absent in some cases (e.g., regarding its effective flowering diameter). Furthermore, data describing the management of P. elata are scarce, including potential solutions to compensate for the deficit of natural regeneration. Along the same lines, genetic studies still remain at an early stage and only vague hypotheses have been offered to explain the origins of the tree's populations. We emphasize the need for new research on those topics. Further studies would be useful in deciding whether P. elata populations can continue to be logged without the species being threatened with extinction. Introduction. En raison de la diminution des ressources en bois d'oeuvre tropicaux, il convient d'améliorer les connaissances sur les espèces ligneuses en vue de développer des politiques d'exploitation réellement durables. Reconnu pour la grande qualité de son bois, Cylicodiscus gabunensis Harms (Fabaceae-Caesalpinioideae) est une essence à haute valeur socio-économique. Cet article dresse la synthèse bibliographique des connaissances relatives à cette espèce en vue de mettre en avant l'ensemble des aspects méritant des investigations scientifiques approfondies. Littérature. Commercialisée sous le nom d'okan, C. gabunensis est une espèce ligneuse non grégaire vivant dans les forêts denses humides tropicales sempervirentes et semi-décidues. Arbre fétiche pour certains peuples autochtones, C. gabunensis est utilisé par les communautés rurales pour de multiples usages. C'est une espèce à phénologie régulière avec une dispersion anémochore des graines. Les populations d'arbres affichent un déficit de régénération en forêt dense humide sempervirente, ce qui compromettrait l'exploitation de l'espèce à long terme. Ce risque est accru par le manque évident d'informations écologiques et sylvicoles permettant une gestion durable. Conclusions. Cette revue bibliographique résume l'ensemble des informations disponibles sur C. gabunensis principalement en botanique, anatomie du bois, écologie et ethnobotanique. Elle renseigne sur l'état actuel des connaissances au regard des rythmes d'exploitation et de l'état des populations de l'espèce. Precipitous declines in Africa's native fauna and flora are recognized, but few comprehensive records of these changes have been compiled. Here, we present population trends for African elephants in the 6,213,000 km2 Sudano-Sahelian range of West and Central Africa assessed through the analysis of aerial and ground surveys conducted over the past 4 decades. These surveys are focused on the best protected areas in the region, and therefore represent the best case scenario for the northern savanna elephants. A minimum of 7,745 elephants currently inhabit the entire region, representing a minimum decline of 50% from estimates four decades ago for these protected areas. Most of the historic range is now devoid of elephants and, therefore, was not surveyed. Of the 23 surveyed elephant populations, half are estimated to number less than 200 individuals. Historically, most populations numbering less than 200 individuals in the region were extirpated within a few decades. Declines differed by region, with Central African populations experiencing much higher declines (276%) than those in West Africa (233%). As a result, elephants in West Africa now account for 86% of the total surveyed. Range wide, two refuge zones retain elephants, one in West and the other in Central Africa. These zones are separated by a large distance (,900 km) of high density human land use, suggesting connectivity between the regions is permanently cut. Within each zone, however, sporadic contacts between populations remain. Retaining such connectivity should be a high priority for conservation of elephants in this region. Specific corridors designed to reduce the isolation of the surveyed populations are proposed. L'utilisation des tarifs de cubage fait partie du quotidien des aménagistes et gestionnaires forestiers. Toutefois, elle se fait généralement au mépris des conditions d'application (zone géographique, gamme de diamètres), ce qui peut engendrer des erreurs dans les estimations de volume. L'objectif de cette étude est de tester la validité des tarifs de cubage actuellement disponibles pour trois essences des forêts du sud-est du Cameroun, dont ceux utilisés par l'administration nationale et, le cas échéant, de proposer des tarifs adaptés pour la zone d'étude. Trois espèces commerciales sont concernées : le sapelli, Entandrophragma cylindricum, le tali, Erythrophleum suaveolens, et l'assaméla, Pericopsis elata. Les données dendrométriques ont été collectées par échantillonnage destructif de 43 arbres régulièrement répartis sur toute la gamme de diamètres. Le volume du fût a été calculé par la méthode des billons successifs et des tarifs de cubage linéaires et non linéaires ont été ajustés aux données par la méthode des moindres carrés pondérés. Les résultats montrent que le meilleur modèle de cubage est non linéaire pour les trois espèces. Les équations utilisées jusqu'à présent par l'administration forestière sous-estiment significativement le volume des arbres et les erreurs d'estimation sont d'autant plus grandes que la taille de l'arbre est importante. Les tarifs de cubage proposés, une fois validés, devraient pouvoir à l'avenir être utilisés pour une meilleure estimation du volume des arbres dans la zone d'étude. Considérant les enjeux internationaux auxquels adhère le Cameroun (FLEGT et REDD+), il est crucial de disposer d'outils performants d'estimation du volume des arbres. Dans ce contexte, il s'avère important que l'administration forestière camerounaise puisse mener à bien un vaste programme de révision des tarifs de cubage. ; Volume tables are routinely used by forest planners and managers, but generally with no regard for the conditions in which they are applied (geographical zone, diameter range), which can cause errors in estimations of timber volumes. The aim of this study is to test the validity of currently available volume tables, including those used by the government, for three commercial tree species in the forests of south-eastern Cameroon, and if required to propose tables suited to the study zone. The three species concerned are sapelli, Entandrophragma cylindricum, tali, Erythrophleum suaveolens, and assamela Pericopsis elata. Dendrometric data were collected by destructive sampling of 43 trees that were evenly distributed across the diameter range. Stemwood volume was calculated through successive butt-log measurements and linear and non-linear volume tables were adjusted by means of the weighted least-squares method. The results show that the best volume tables for all three species are non-linear. The equations used by the forests authority until now significantly under-estimate standing timber volumes and the estimation errors increase with the size of the trees. The proposed volume tables, once validated, should in future produce more accurate estimations of standing timber in the study zone. Given the international challenges involving Cameroon (FLEGT and REDD+), it is essential that it should have effective tools for estimating standing timber volumes. It is therefore important for Cameroon's forests authority to conduct a large-scale programme to revise its volume tables. ; La utilización de tablas de cubicación forma parte de las actividades cotidianas de los responsables de la ordenación y manejo forestal. No obstante, dichas tablas suelen emplearse sin tener en cuenta las condiciones de aplicación (zona geográfica, clases de diámetro), lo que puede provocar errores en las estimaciones volumétricas. El objetivo de este estudio es probar la validez de las tablas de cubicación actualmente disponibles para tres especies de los bosques del sudeste de Camerún, incluyendo las tablas empleadas por la administración nacional, y, llegado el caso, proponer tablas adaptadas al área estudiada. Las tres especies comerciales concernidas son: el sapelli, Entandrophragma cylindricum, el tali, Erythrophleum suaveolens, y la assamela, Pericopsis elata. La recogida de datos dasométricos se efectuó por muestreo destructivo de 43 árboles regularmente distribuidos en las diferentes clases de diámetro. Se calculó el volumen de fuste por el método de trozas sucesivas y las tablas de cubicación lineales y no lineales se ajustaron a los datos mediante el método de mínimos cuadrados ponderados. Los resultados muestran que el mejor modelo de cubicación en las tres especies es el no lineal. Las ecuaciones actualmente empleadas por la administración forestal subestiman significativamente el volumen de los árboles y, cuanto mayor es el tamaño del árbol, tanto más importantes son los errores de estimación. Las tablas de cubicación propuestas, una vez validadas, deberían poder utilizarse para una mejor estimación del volumen de árboles en la zona estudiada. Teniendo en cuenta los envites internacionales que envuelven a Camerún (FLEGT y REDD+), es esencial contar con herramientas eficientes para estimar el volumen de los árboles. L'identification des acteurs, des finages, des dynamiques sociales locales et du rapport à la terre et aux ressources naturelles constitue un préalable à toute intervention dans les zones péri-urbaines soumises à forte pression anthropique. En République Démocratique du Congo, la capitale Kinshasa, mégapole en pleine extension, engendre une pression considérable sur les ressources ligneuses dans les finages des villages situés dans sa grande périphérie. Cet article décrit ces rapports des acteurs aux espaces-ressources dans deux zones (Bas-Congo et plateau Bateke) situées en périphérie de cette ville, zones considérées comme les bassins d'approvisionnement en bois-énergie de la capitale. Les deux sites différent en termes de pression foncière (très élevée partout dans le Bas-Congo, concentrée sur les forêts galeries sur les plateaux Bateke) mais présentent les mêmes faciès de surexploitation des ressources ligneuses. Dans les deux cas, la gestion locale, aux mains des chefs de villages ou des chefs de lignée, a failli. La volonté de reboisement est aussi grande au Bas-Congo qu'elle semble moins développée sur les plateaux. Dans les deux cas, la pratique du retour rapide sur la formation végétale (pour l'agriculture ou pour l'exploitation du charbon de bois) hypothèque la possibilité de régénération de la plupart des essences locales. Les perspectives d'une gestion communautaire des ressources naturelles par la nouvelle loi portant création des « Forêts des Communautés Locales » sont discutées. ; Peri-urban forests are under strong anthropic pressure. Any activity needs a previous identification of stakeholders, landscape perception, socio-economic trends in local communities and their relationships with land and natural resources. Kinshasa (capital of Democratic Republic of Congo, DRC) is a 10 millions inhabitants city with rapid growth and increasing impacts on surrounding villages linked with forest natural resources. This paper describes the relationship amongst local communities stakeholders and their relations with land areas and wood resources. Two areas surrounding Kinshasa (Bas-Congo and Bateke Plateaux) are considered as major fuel-wood and charcoal supply zones for the city. Those two areas are different in terms of land pressure (very high in Bas-Congo and focused on riparian forests on Bateke Plateaux), but show the same pattern of overuse of the forest and woody natural resources. In both areas, local management of forest resources by the traditional authorities (heads of village or lineage) has failed. Local population willingness for reforestation and forest restoration activities is much more important in Bas-Congo than on Bateke Plateaux. In both areas, shifting cultivation due to slash and burn practices for agricultural and charcoal practices are more and more quick. This has strong negative impact on the potential of regeneration process with local forest species. Sustainability of forest natural resources management by communities is discussed in regard to the on going negotiations on community based forest management regulations. ; Peer reviewed

Questions: Is there any theoretical model enabling predictions of the optimal tree size distribution in tropical communities? Can we use such a theoretical framework for quantifying the degree of disturbance?. Location: Reserve of Yangambi, northeast region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Methods: We applied an allometric model based on the assumption that a virtually undisturbed forest uses all available resources. In this condition, the forest structure (e.g. the tree size distribution) is theoretically predictable from the scaling of the tree crown with tree height at an individual level. The degree of disturbance can be assessed through comparing the slopes of the tree size distribution curves in the observed and predicted conditions. We tested this tool in forest stands subjected to different degrees of disturbance. We inventoried trees >1.3 m in height by measuring the DBH in three plots of 1 ha each, and measured tree height, crown radius and crown length in a sub-sample of trees. Results: All tree species, independently of the site, shared the same exponents of allometric relationships: tree height vs tree diameter, crown radius vs tree height, crown length vs tree height and consequently crown volume vs tree height, suggesting that similar trajectories of biomass allocation have evolved irrespective of species. The observed tree size distributions appeared to be power laws (excluding the finite size effect) and, as predicted, the slope was steeper in the less disturbed forest (−2.34) compared to the most disturbed (−1.99). The difference in the slope compared to the theoretical fully functional forest (−2.65) represents the metric for assessing the degree of disturbance. Conclusions: We developed a simple tool for operationalizing the concept of 'disturbance' in tropical forests. En Afrique, la phénologie reproductive des arbres tropicaux, majoritairement annuelle, semble présenter une certaine régularité. Cette étude documente les variations intra- et interannuelles de la phénologie reproductive des arbres de la forêt du Mayombe à partir des données historiques de la Réserve de Luki (République démocratique du Congo). Le diamètre de reproduction des espèces exploitées pour le bois, encore largement méconnu, a été également examiné pour les espèces suffisamment représentées dans les données. Le suivi phénologique de 3 642 arbres appartenant à 158 espèces et 39 familles a été réalisé tous les 10 jours de 1948 à 1957. Les statistiques circulaires ont été utilisées pour tester le synchronisme de la phénologie entre arbres, à l'échelle de la communauté, pour la forêt dans son ensemble, et individuellement pour 87 espèces, dont 35 espèces bien représentées (n ≥ 20 arbres), 16 espèces commerciales et 36 autres espèces. Des régressions logistiques ont permis de déterminer le diamètre de fructification (minimum et régulier) de ces espèces. Pour la majorité des espèces, la floraison était régulière, annuelle et largement saisonnière (81,6 %, 71 espèces). Les pics étaient plus marqués pour la floraison que pour la fructification, plus étalée dans le temps, bien que significativement agrégée temporellement. La majorité des arbres et des espèces fleurissaient entre décembre et février, pendant la petite saison sèche, bien que des fleurs et des fruits étaient observables toute l'année à l'échelle de la communauté. Seules 13 espèces ont montré une relation significative entre le diamètre et la reproduction, parmi lesquelles sept espèces de canopée, cinq de sous-bois et une héliophile. Background: Currently, about 400 million hectares of tropical moist forests worldwide are designated production forests, about a quarter of which are managed by rural communities and indigenous peoples. There has been a gradual impoverishment of forest resources inside selectively logged forests in which the volume of timber extracted over the first cutting cycle was mostly from large, old trees that matured over a century or more and grew in the absence of strong anthropological pressures. In forests now being logged for a second and third time, that volume has not been reconstituted due in part to the lack of implementation of post-logging silvicultural treatments. This depletion of timber stocks renders the degraded forests prone to conversion to other land uses. Although it is essential to preserve undisturbed primary forests through the creation of protected areas, these areas alone will not be able to ensure the conservation of all species on a pan-tropical scale, for social, economic and political reasons. The conservation of tropical forests of tomorrow will mostly take place within human-modified (logged, domesticated) forests. In this context, silvicultural interventions are considered by many tropical foresters and forest ecologists as tools capable of effectively conserving tropical forest biodiversity and ecosystem services while stimulating forest production. This systematic review aims to assess past and current evidence of the impact of silviculture on tropical forests and to identify silvicultural practices appropriate for the current conditions in the forests and forestry sectors of the Congo Basin, Amazonia and Southeast Asia. Methods: This systematic review will undertake an extensive search of literature to assess the relative effectiveness of different silvicultural interventions on timber production and the conservation value of forests, and to determine whether there is a relationship between sustainability of timber harvesting and the maintenance/conservation of other ecosystem services and biodiversity in production forests. Data will be extracted for meta-analysis of at least sub-sets of the review questions. Findings are expected to help inform policy and develop evidence-based practice guidelines on silvicultural practices in tropical forests. ; Peer reviewed

Combining these spatial predictions with scenarios of climatic and anthropogenic global change suggests a high vulnerability of the northern and southern forest margins, the Atlantic forests and most forests in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where both climate and anthropogenic threats are expected to increase sharply by 2085. Our results show that the uncertainty in taxon-specific distributions averages out at the community level, and reveal highly deterministic assemblages. We uncover contrasting floristic and functional compositions across climates, soil types and anthropogenic gradients, with functional convergence among types of forest that are floristically dissimilar. Combining these spatial predictions with scenarios of climatic and anthropogenic global change suggests a high vulnerability of the northern and southern forest margins, the Atlantic forests and most forests in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where both climate and anthropogenic threats are expected to increase sharply by 2085. These results constitute key quantitative benchmarks for scientists and policymakers to shape transnational conservation and management strategies that aim to provide a sustainable future for central African forests.
