This article addresses the question of subjectivity in research. In order to facilitate the use of subjectivity in a research context, the author reminds readers of possible procedures as suggested in the literature. Particular attention is given to the idea of peer debriefing. Inspired by psychoanalysis, the author expands on the concept of discussant or debriefer and suggests that by doing so, subjectivity can be better understood. It is suggested that this may actually be fully integrated into a study in order to both better understand the subject under examination as well as the influence of the research mentor and student dyad. The author shares an example of this approach taken from a previously completed study on pedophile sex abusers.

This article summarizes preliminary findings from a series of pilot studies on the processes involved in treating sexual offenders. Quantitative and qualitative methods were used on samples of 15 to 24 child molesters undergoing a prison-based cognitive-behavioral and relapse prevention treatment program. Results are presented and discussed in the form of 5 questions: (1) Are therapists just "technicians"? The offenders' point of view (2) Does confronting the therapist mean treatment resistance? (3) Are the therapists perceived as therapists, parents, or a bit of both? (4) Is the structure of the program important? The offenders' point of view and (5) Is a sense of mastery important in a prison setting? It is suggested that researchers investigate the processes underlying the treatment of offenders, especially the common factors which have been shown to have an effect on therapeutic outcome.

This inquiry explored recovery from drug abuse from a mother's perspective. Women's experiences of treatment and recovery are unique from men's, and mothers' experiences have been studied little (Poole & Dell, 2005). During three interviews, the participant was encouraged to deeply explore her experience of recovery as a woman and mother. This project used both Consensual Qualitative Research (Hill, Thompson, Hess, et al., 2005) and the Wish and Fear List (Perry, 1997). These two types of analysis provided complementary views of the participant's experiences. The themes of mothering, recovery, and identity development–-and the proportions of wishes and fears expressed at two phases in the participant's recovery journey–-are discussed.

Many clients and patients seek mental health services, including psychotherapy, in the private sector. However, there is a lack of information concerning the characteristics of private psychotherapy practice. With an increased focus on access to mental health care, knowledge of this sector is needed. This study aimed to document the current characteristics of practitioners who offer psychotherapy services in the private sector in Quebec. Participants included 671 psychologists and psychotherapists. Results indicated that the most commonly served age population was adults, the average number of sessions was 23.35 (SD = 20.82), and the average fee for individual therapy was $95.10 (SD = $16.69). Data are also reported on the types of services offered, practitioners collaboration with other professionals, the conditions treated, the use of various clinical tools, and new trends in the field. Implications of the results for practitioners, trainees, and policy developers are discussed. ; Bien des clients et patients se tournent vers le secteur privé pour obtenir des services de santé mentale, notamment en psychothérapie. Toutefois, on constate un manque d'information concernant les caractéristiques de la pratique privée en psychothérapie. Étant donné l'importance croissante accordée à l'accès aux soins de santé mentale, il y a lieu de mieux connaître ce secteur. Cette étude visait à documenter les caractéristiques actuelles des praticiens et praticiennes qui offrent des services de psychothérapie dans le secteur privé au Québec. Le groupe de participants comptait 671 psychologues et psychothérapeutes. Selon les résultats, le groupe d'âge le plus couramment desservi était constitué d'une population adulte, le nombre moyen de séances était de 23,35 (ÉT = 20,82) et le tarif moyen pour une thérapie individuelle s'établissait à 95,10 $ (ÉT = 16,69 $). Les données recueillies indiquaient également les types de services offerts, la collaboration des praticiens avec d'autres professionnels, les problèmes traités, le recours à divers outils cliniques et les nouvelles tendances dans le domaine. L'article propose aussi une discussion des implications des résultats pour les praticiennes et praticiens, ainsi que pour les personnes chargées d'élaborer des politiques.
