Face au manque de matériau permettant d'établir précisément le profil social des étudiants français avant la Première Guerre mondiale, il faut, pour comprendre les modalités de leur constitution en un groupe social, retracer le processus réussi de leur organisation collective et sa reconnaissance par les pouvoirs publics. C'est la démarche suivie par cet article, qui montre ce que révèlent de l'émergence et de la structuration du groupe social étudiant en France les trois lois de conscription de 1889, 1905 et 1913, et les mobilisations qu'elles ont suscitées, pour l'introduction de dispositions particulières concernant les étudiants ou en réaction à celles-ci. D'un côté, les campagnes étudiantes autour du service militaire constituent des moments de cristallisation exceptionnels, qui permettent de saisir le rapport de force entre étudiants et pouvoirs publics et ainsi d'interroger le rapport des étudiants à l'État et à la nation. De l'autre, elles reflètent les principales évolutions des formes de mobilisation collective des étudiants durant cette période.

Zusammenfassung: Comment les étudiants sont-ils devenus un groupe social, organisé et reconnu comme tel ? En France comme en Allemagne, ce livre révèle le rôle décisif des organisations étudiantes dans ce processus. Instances de représentation et de socialisation, elles ont contribué à faire des étudiants un groupe aux caractéristiques communes. En articulant rapport à l'État et sociabilité associative, formes de socialisation et manifestations politiques, négociations avec les pouvoirs publics et catégorisation ou encore alliances nationales et conflits locaux, l'auteur retrace la formation des étudiants comme groupe entre 1880 et 1914 et les origines des formes actuelles de leur organisation, de leur action et de leurs représentation collectives. Il éclaire ce faisant l'importance du travail de mobilisation dans la formation et la reproduction d'un groupe social.

À travers l'analyse des élections au cabinet de lecture académique et au comité des étudiants de l'université de Berlin, cet article interroge les modalités et les possibilités de politisation des étudiants allemands à la fin du xix e siècle. Les élections à ces deux institutions autogérées permettent aux étudiants d'exprimer et de mettre en pratique leur vision du monde et de l'ordre social élaborée plus généralement, alors qu'ils expriment leur rejet de la politique active et partisane. Ce ne sont pas des questions corporatistes et universitaires, mais bien le national qui devient un enjeu central de l'opposition entre étudiants. En effet, malgré le rejet officiel de la politique et les mesures prises par les autorités universitaires pour empêcher tout conflit (politique), les étudiants nationalistes réussissent à imposer le national comme ligne de clivage et désignent les étudiants juifs et progressistes comme une menace pour l'unité allemande, du moins à l'université. Pourtant, les concurrences entre organisations étudiantes ne se limitent pas à ce clivage autour de la nation et de la définition du bon étudiant allemand. L'analyse de ces luttes électorales étudiantes contribue ainsi à la socio-histoire des processus de politisation en-dehors du suffrage universel.

This thesis aims to understand how, from individuals linked through bureaucratic enrolment at a higher learning institution, students were able to become in France and in Germany, a social group, whose members are bound together by organizations seeking to defend their specific interests and needs. The end of the 1870s and the beginning of the 1880s mark a decisive change in both countries, as public authorities – from the universities as well as from the political powers – increasingly authorize and accept the existence of student organizations. This change is traced over the long term, through the study of political repression of the student movements and of the transformation of the relation between students and the nation-state (in construction) since the beginning of the 19th century.These student organizations are socialization bodies. For their members, it is as much a matter of acquiring practical political competences as it is of completing their university curricula thanks to conferences or working groups or of strengthening their masculine bodies through physical activities. A competitive struggle begins between student organizations around a num-ber of issues between the 1870s and until First World War, the period that is more specifically analysed in this thesis: student representation; relationship with public authorities; integration into the university urban space; integration into the local and national elite society; obtaining material and intellectual benefits for the members; developing common sociability forms. Through this competition students contribute to the formation of a social space of their own, and that we have named student organization space.Through the analysis of this social space and through a constant interest in the relation-ship of students to politics and the nation-state, it is possible to understand how the place and the role of students in university and society was transformed at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century and, therefore, how they could form a social group. ; Cette thèse s'attache à comprendre comment, d'individus rattachés entre eux par une inscription bureaucratique à un établissement d'enseignement supérieur, les étudiants en France et en Allemagne ont pu devenir, un groupe social, dont les membres sont reliés entre eux par des organisations, qui cherchent à défendre leurs intérêts et besoins spécifiques. Le tournant des années 1870-1880 marque dans les deux pays un changement majeur, celui d'une autorisation et d'une acceptation grandissante des organisations étudiantes par les pouvoirs publics, tant universitaires et politiques. Ce changement est retracé dans la longue durée, par l'étude des répressions politiques des mouvements étudiants et de la transformation de la relation entre étudiants et État-nation (en construction) depuis le début du XIXe siècle.Ces organisations étudiantes constituent des instances de socialisation. Il s'agit autant pour leurs membres d'acquérir des compétences politiques pratiques, que de compléter leurs cursus universitaires grâce à des conférences ou à des groupes ou encore qu'à renforcer leurs corps par des exercices physiques. Une lutte concurrentielle s'établit entre elles autour d'un grand nombre d'enjeux entre les années 1870/80 et la Première Guerre mondiale, période plus spécifiquement étudiée dans cette thèse : représentation des étudiants, relations avec les pouvoirs publics, insertion dans l'espace urbain universitaire, insertion dans la société élitaire locale et nationale, obtention d'avantages matériels et intellectuels pour les membres, développement d'une sociabilité commune. Par ces concurrences, les étudiants contribuent à la formation d'un espace social qui leur est propre et que nous avons appelé espace des organisations étudiantes.Par l'analyse de cet espace social et par un intérêt constant au rapport des étudiants à la politique et à l'État-nation, il est possible de comprendre comment la place et le rôle des étudiants dans l'université et la société a été transformée au tournant des XIXe et XXe siècles et, partant, comment ils ont pu former un groupe social.

Cet article se propose d'analyser dans une approche comparative les enjeux liés à la possession de véritables locaux par les organisations étudiantes françaises et allemandes entre 1871 et 1914. La possession d'une telle maison permettait à la fois l'implantation des organisations étudiantes dans les « espaces étudiants » et le renforcement de la cohésion des membres, grâce à la mise à disposition d'espaces spécifiques aux formes de sociabilité bourgeoises masculines. Les maisons étaient de ce fait des lieux d'encadrement des étudiants.
