Die größte Konkurrenz innerhalb der afrikanischen Gemeinschaft besteht zwischen ANC und IFP. Unterschiede im Wahlverfahren traten zwischen der Stadt- und der eher traditionell eingestellten Landbevölkerung auf. Der ANC-Wahlkampf auf dem Land gestaltete sich wegen des Verhaltens der traditionellen Chiefs, die die IFP favorisieren und quasi no-go-areas einrichteten, schwieriger. Von der National Party wurden vor allem die Minderheiten als Zünglein an der Waage umworben. Als ethnische Partei konnte die Minority Front zahlreiche indische Wähler gewinnen. Ansonsten gelang es keiner Partei, über ihre Stammwählerschaft hinaus in neue Regionen vorzustoßen. Aufgrund der Wahlergebnisse sind besonders ANC und IFP auf eine gute Zusammenarbeit angewiesen. Thegrowth of business classes in Africa has attracted much interest since the 1980s when, in the context of severe economic malaise, the impact of the state on development was subjected to critical reappraisal.1Out of this emerged a consensus that the abysmal economic record of the 1960s and 1970s could, to a large degree, be ascribed to the debilitating effect of an overstretched and swollen state. Official development thinking took this argument the furthest: at the core of the problem, it was asserted, was the expansion of the state's rôle from the preferred minimalist function of providing the legal and macro-economic regulatory framework for capital accumulation, to a more profound intervention in the productive process. As a remedy, the state would have to be restrained from usurping the primary rôle which the market's invisible hand ought to be playing.2

Many accounting decisions involve the use of estimates in situations where absolute certainty is not available. The case involves three activities. First, you will read a hypothetical but realistic scenario involving period-end adjustments for the division of a large company. Second, assuming the role of the division controller, you will make the four required decisions and determine division net earnings after adjustment. Finally, you will prepare a detailed communication documenting the rationale for your decisions, which will form the basis for later classroom discussion.
