He has held Visiting Professorships at the universities of Pavia, Toulouse, Paris I: Panthéon-Sorbonne, Campinas in Brazil, Oslo and Sciences-Po in Paris. His previous publications include Cities and Regions in the New Europe(1992) and Successful European Regions: Northern Ireland Learning from Others(1996). Lidia Grecois Lecturer in the Sociology of Economics and Labour Processes at the University of Bari, Italy. She previously worked at Trinity College, Dublin, where she carried out two EU-funded research projects. As a consultant, Lidia has worked for the University of Durham and the Sussex European Institute, and more recently for the European Union. She is the author of Industrial Redundancies: A Comparative Analysis of the Chemical and Clothing Industries in the UK and Italy (2002) and co-author of Building the European Research Area: European Socio-Economic Research in Practice(forthcoming).

China's path is conceived as a transition from an economically underdeveloped and semi-colonised country of the Global South into a modern socialist country in a multipolar world where successive steps (modes of regulation) were shaped by China's external environment (uneven and combined development) and a succession of contradictions and crises encountered along the way. Three phases are examined: a turbulent phase of socialist construction in a context of capital shortage and US embargoes; a phase of reform and opening up in an era of neoliberal globalisation, whose early roots lay in the early 1970s' rapprochement with the US; and a New Era dating from 2017. In each phase, crises and contradictions saw waves of reform, involving successive joint transformations of economic structures and institutions, while each phase was anticipated in the years that preceded it, so opening up started in the early 1970s with the rapprochement with the US, and aspects of the New Era concern with innovation, green development, common prosperity and an equitable global order started to emerge earlier.

A new world order is taking shape as a result of the relative decline of the United States (US) and other Western economies. An important aspect of relative decline is a progressive secular slowing down of productivity growth. Another is the way US development has been shaped and to some extent offset by international resource transfers. To explain these phenomena, attention is paid to the role of profitability as a driver of productivity and investment and global hegemony as a driver of international resource transfers. Particular attention is paid to an empirical analysis of the profitability of the US corporate non-financial sector and the existence of a secular decline in profitability since the mid-1960s interrupted only by the upward phases of a series of shorter-term economic cycles. Attention is also paid to the role of financial investments and some of the international resource transfers that have shaped, offset, and contained relative economic decline. An analysis of these trends frame and explain epochal changes in the dynamics and map of uneven and combined development and the likelihood of a global reset as the centre of world development shifts to Asia and the Eurasian continent.

Ziel des Aufsatzes ist es einerseits, "eine Reihe empirischer und theoretischer Verbindungen zwischen geographischer Verteilung von Ungleichheiten und andererseits zwischen geographisch erfaßbaren Strukturen der Produktivität und Mobilisierung menschlichen Potentials herzustellen. Zu diesem Zwecke wird eine kurze Aufstellung der derzeitigen regionalen Ungleichheiten in der EU gegeben. Es wird aufgezeigt, daß Unterschiede der im Inland pro Kopf erreichten Bruttoproduktion von zwei Elementen abhängt: den Unterschieden in der Produktivität und Unterschieden in der Erwerbstätigkeitsrate, wobei der Standpunkt vertreten wird, daß letztere die Fähigkeit eines Gebietes widerspiegelt, sein menschliches Potential zu mobilisieren. Eine Analyse von Daten für NUTS 1 Regionen in der EU und für ihre Nachbarländer zeigt, daß die respektiven Rollen von Produktivität und Erwerbstätigkeitsratendifferentialen bei der Erklärung von Abweichungen in der Pro-Kopf-Produktion ganz deutlich von einer Region zur anderen schwanken. Zur Interpretation der empirischen Ergebnisse wird zunächst die Behauptung aufgestellt, daß die geographische Verteilung von Produktion, Produktivität und Erwerbstätigkeit teilweise durch Unterschiede in den regulativen Bestimmungen zu suchen sind, die in verschiedenen Ländern und Regionen zur Anwendung gelangen, und sodann, daß der Begriff regionaler Leistung der Erweiterung bedarf, um nicht nur die Dynamik der Produktivitätsordnung, sondern auch Struktur und Organisation des Marktes für Erwerbstätigkeit und seine Verknüpfung mit dem System der gesellschaftlichen Reproduktion in Betracht zu ziehen."
