None of us ever reads any text without some kind of pre-understanding. We set it within the context of what we already know. Within biblical studies, we have become accustomed to giving a high value to the original context within which the text was written or the original context of the events it describes. Within the church we are used to reading the text within the context of liturgy, lectionary, or faith tradition. Sometimes, reading a familiar text consciously from a particular context means that different things emerge in a striking way. Reading the Gospel stories about Jesus & the Samaritans from the context of the present-day struggles in Israel-Palestine is one example of such an approach. It is provided by this article.
