Analysis of (1) data on publishing performance by individuals & institutions, covering 1977-1987, & (2) citations to articles published in the Social Science Quarterly (SSQ) 1977-1979 suggests that SSQ is a highly interdisciplinary, broadly based journal of high quality & national scope. Most contributions are from research schools, though smaller, less research-oriented schools are also well represented. Articles are generally well read & cited, & citing journals are themselves of generally high quality & from several related disciplines. 7 Tables, 9 References. Adapted from the source document.

Citation totals from the Social Science Citation Index, 1966-1988, are used to determine which of several books & articles have been cited often enough to be called "classic" in terms of their influence among "social choice" scholars. The term "social choice" is used broadly, to include not only works by K. J. Arrow & A. Sen, but also Duncan Black, Anthony Downs, James Buchanan, Gordon Tullock, Mancur Olson, William Niskanen, & others from modern "public choice." Specifically researched were books by J. Rawls, R. Farguahrson, P. Fishburn, R. Luce, H. Raiffa, & important articles by Ronald Coase, A. Gibbard, Ann Kruger, Sam Peltzman, Paul Samuelson, Mark Satterthwaite, George Stigler, Charles Tiebout, & Gordon Tullock. Some have received hundreds of cites over their lives, while others have received few. In 1987, these authors' works were collectively cited 1,189 times in 450+ different journals. The citation itself was quite eclectic, including, in addition to large numbers in the economics, political science, politics, & law literature, journals from business, environmental studies, health, international relations, philosophy, planning, psychology, public administration, science, sociology, interdisciplinary social science, & urban studies. 3 Tables, 28 References. This paper demonstrates the significant & extensive impact of W. H. Riker's works on the study of political science & public choice. We provide a citation analysis, peer reviews, & commentaries from former colleagues & students. The citation analysis shows that Riker's work has been cited more than 3,700 times by over 2,000 different scholars in more than 500 different journals. Peers, former colleagues, & students highly respected him as a scholar & a person. Riker's most significant intellectual contributions include using game theory to analyze political behavior & incorporating rational interest theory as a basis for the scientific study of politics. 4 Tables, 48 References. An analysis of publishing performance in the Journal of Law & Economics (JLE) & Public Choice (PC). Tables present information by institution type, & Carnegie Foundation school classification publishing performance is ranked & includes author's affiliation, & where the author received his/her degree. This was used to determine the most active institutions in terms of research; similar information is provided with respect to the most active individual authors. It is suggested that the findings should be helpful to potential graduate students & job applicants interested in those subject areas; scholars wishing to interact with others doing similar work should also find the information helpful. Findings show that the U of Chicago (Ill) is the most dominant force overall, particularly in the JLE. Most contributors are from large, well-endowed research schools, but smaller, comprehensive schools are well-represented in both journals. Many papers are from foreign sources, with these accounting for 15% & 30% of the totals for, respectively, JLE & PC. Government & private contributors account for less than 10% of total contributions. 12 Tables, 17 References. Modified AA

Previous empirical research on voter participation & rational behavior theory is updated using data from the 1970 & 1980 census & the 1970 & 1982 US Congressional elections. Parameter equivalency tests yield interesting results regarding independent variable constancy over time, especially with regard to black voter participation. Specification error tests provide evidence that the rational behavior model & congressional district data generate statistically valid estimates of the determinants of voting participation. 2 Tables, 25 References. ABSTRACT This article analyzes the estimated yearly earnings of white, black, and Hispanic males and white, black, and Hispanic females in order to determine two things: Whether white male earnings continue to exceed those of reference groups, and how the cost of being female (the gender effect) compares with the cost of being nonwhite (black or Hispanic). We find that white males earnings are still greater than those of other groups, but when earnings are adjusted for market related differences, most of the differentials for black and Hispanic (Mexican‐American, Puerto‐Rican) males disappear. Even after adjustment, however, a considerable portion of females earnings differentials remain unexplained. Gender effects are considerably larger than race or ethnic effects.
