Discourses about EU Transport Decarbonisation:Towards a Paradigm Shift?
In: Dyrhauge , H 2021 , ' Discourses about EU Transport Decarbonisation : Towards a Paradigm Shift? ' , The International Spectator: Italian Journal of International Affairs , vol. 56 , no. 3 , pp. 71-86 . https://doi.org/10.1080/03932729.2021.1962665
The development and introduction of new technologies are central to achieving sustainable transitions. Policymakers are important in enabling a successful transition. However, discourses about EU transport decarbonisation reveal multiple policy approaches to technology innovation, both in terms of decarbonising the car and building new alternative fuels infrastructure for transport. A discursive institutionalist analysis of these two separate but interdependent communicative discourses on road transport decarbonisation shows the complexities of facilitating transformative change. This shift requires coordination at all levels involving different actors and sector coupling to successfully decarbonise road transport.

Political Myths in Climate Leadership: The Case of Danish Climate and Energy Pioneership
In: Scandinavian political studies, Band 44, Heft 1, S. 13-33
ISSN: 1467-9477
Climate leadership is important for the transition to a low‐carbon economy, where some countries are seen as leaders because of their ambitious climate and energy policies. Climate leadership is dynamic and evolves over time to become a political myth, however, which governments use in their policy strategies. Changes in governments lead to new climate and energy strategies that affect the respective countries' leadership positions. This article links the growing literature on environmental/climate leadership and the political myth literature. Specifically, it draws on the environmental/climate leadership framework to analyse the connection between political myths and the climate and energy policy strategies of governments to understand how the changing interpretation of the political myth influences leadership. The article uses Denmark as a case study because of the consensus in the literature on it being a climate and energy policy pioneer. This article analyses how Danish governments interpret the political myth of Danish climate and energy pioneership and how their policies influence the Danish leadership position, concluding that whilst the continued reinterpretations of the political myth of leadership do not always reflect the original myth, the myth remains important for government claims to leadership.

Teaching Qualitative Methods in Social Science: A Problem-based Learning Approach
In: Journal of contemporary European research: JCER, Band 10, Heft 4
ISSN: 1815-347X
Research methods are often seen as a tedious necessity by the students and teachers are often not helping in making these modules relevant for the students' learning process. This article compares two research method modules – a general first year module and a specialised graduate module – to demonstrate how alignment between learning objectives with other aspects of the degree programme can promote active learning and thereby create synergies which foster deep learning. This requires an active learning where the students own research skills and experiences need to be integrated into the research method module and assessment.

The Road to Environmental Policy Integration is Paved with Obstacles: Intra‐ and Inter‐Organizational Conflicts in EU Transport Decision‐Making
In: Journal of common market studies: JCMS, Band 52, Heft 5, S. 985-1001
ISSN: 1468-5965
AbstractTransport is one of the most polluting sectors and needs to adopt environmental protection, yet the constant struggle between the environment and the economy is often won by economic priorities. This struggle makes environmental policy integration difficult, especially in the legislative process. This article analyzes the co‐decision process which led to the adoption of the 2011 Eurovignette Directive, and examines how intra‐organizational conflicts in the European Parliament and the Council shaped inter‐organizational negotiations and thus the level of environmental policy integration in the adopted policy. The European Parliament's rapporteur is identified as central for resolving differences between the actors. Overall, the paper argues that the economic crisis has strengthened existing national economic preferences over environmental protection, leading to environmental policy integration that is symbolic rather than substantial.

Making the European Green Deal work: EU sustainability policies at home and abroad
In: Routledge studies on the governance of sustainability in Europe
"This book critically analyses different dimensions in the sustainable transitions outlined by the European Green Deal, focusing on both internal actions and external relations and highlighting the EU's diverging powers and capabilities in achieving the core objectives. As with the Green Deal itself, the chapters cover different policies including financial instruments, energy policies, climate policies and external policies and apply the ideal-type logics of appropriateness and consequences to analyse sustainable transformations. The variety of the cases contribute to a broad understanding of how different actors interpret and implement the aims of the European Green Deal, including especially those lagging behind, who, for various reasons, are struggling with the sustainable transition. From examining their policies, the book illuminates the challenges and opportunities they are facing. Overall, the contributions address key questions surrounding the EU's powers and limits in inducing transformative change and implementing the European Green Deal. This book will be of key interest to scholars, students and practitioners of EU sustainability policies, sustainability transitions and green economy, environmental studies, energy policy, energy governance and climate change, public policy, comparative politics and international relations"--
