Software Adaptations for the Multi-Handicapped: A Case Study

This paper describes the effects of a computer program used with a deaf and mentally retarded student in a public school. The software programs Toddlers' Tutor (Silicon Valley Systems) and Story Machine (Spinnaker Software Corporation) have been used for about 1½ years, along with fingerspelling and sign language interpretation. Results indicate that computers can be effective teaching tools with multihandicapped individuals. Improvements have been noted in the reception/expression of basic and expanded forms of signed and written language. Also described are implications for students with similar handicaps. Additional research and software development is emphasized.
