This chapter takes an interdisciplinary approach to the subject of memorialization
and commemoration, protest and populism in relation to the performative
enacting and official presentation of difficult history. It analyzes the various
actors instrumentalizing the same dark heritage in different ways, by different
means, and for different purposes, to draw conclusions about processes
of coming to terms with the past ( Vergangenheitsbewältigung ) in relation to the
contemporary context of populism and migration.

Food Heritage and Nationalism in Europe contends that food is a fundamental element of heritage, and a particularly important one in times of crisis. Arguing that food, taste, cuisine and gastronomy are crucial markers of identity that are inherently connected to constructions of place, tradition and the past, the book demonstrates how they play a role in intangible, as well as tangible, heritage. Featuring contributions from experts working across Europe and beyond, and adopting a strong historical and transnational perspective, the book examines the various ways in which food can be understood and used as heritage. Including explorations of imperial spaces, migrations and diasporas; the role of commercialisation processes, and institutional practices within political and cultural domains, this volume considers all aspects of this complex issue. Arguing that the various European cuisines are the result of exchanges, hybridities and complex historical processes, Porciani and the chapter authors offer up a new way of deconstructing banal nationalism and of moving away from the idea of static identities. Previous studies of place attachment have tended to focus on the positive
(rather than negative) reasons why individuals associate themselves
with a particular place, while studies on memory and identity
have frequently been based on negative experiences of and in place.
Drawing on interviews and focus groups, this article highlights how
Germans and Poles with a history of forced migration have different
perceptions of the same geographical 'home', and how their tangible
and intangible encounters during a museum visit helped to generate
these understandings. It argues that a people-place-process complex
of attachment provides a more useful conceptualisation of belonging
than either place attachment or memory, because it encapsulates a
greater breadth of ideas that contribute towards these feelings.

Across Europe and beyond, much is being made of the perceived
breakdown of the nation state, which was historically configured as a
'container' of heritage formations, adopting and perusing local traditions
where possible but oppressing them where they were deemed
unsuitable. Migration is seen as eroding the rigid boundaries of this
configuration, potentially liberating identities and heritages in the
process. This special issue aims to address the relationship between
critical heritage and redefinitions of self, other, community and place
within the contemporary global reality of movement and flux.

This book analyzes conflicting notions of identity and belonging in contemporary Europe. Addressing the creation, negotiation, and (re)use of diverse spaces and places of belonging, the book examines their fascinating complexities in the context of a changing Europe. Taking an innovative interdisciplinary approach, the volume examines renegotiations of belonging played out through cultural encounters with difference and change, in diverse public spaces and contested places. Highlighting the interconnections between social change and culture, heritage, and memory, the chapters analyze multilayered public spaces and the negotiations over culture and belonging that are connected to them. Through analyses of diverse case studies, the editors and authors draw out the significance of the participation or exclusion of differing community, grassroots, and activist groups in such practices and discourses of belonging in relation to the contemporary emergence of identity conflicts and political uses of the past across Europe. They analyze the ways in which people's sense of belonging is connected to cultural, heritage, and memory practices undertaken in different public spaces, including museums, cultural and community centres, city monuments and built heritage, neglected urban spaces, and online fora. This book provides a valuable contribution to the existing bodies of work on identities, migration, public space, memory, and heritage.

This chapter differs from others in this monograph in its focus on two political
organisations, the EU and the COE, and their top-down
efforts to engage with
issues of heritage and identity. These organisations represent the two most
visible post-1945
political efforts to transform Europe as a region, by promoting
further integration; both are driven by a fluid collective memory of the impact
made by world wars, genocide, economic deprivation and other forms of societal
disruption. By their very nature, both organisations have sought to engage with
the construction and reconstruction of history and identity, both to pursue a
vision of a common Europe and to build a sense of purpose and value in their
organisational efforts to build integration (and therefore justify their existence).
They have selected particular policy instruments, which Hood (1983) defines as
the tools by which actors implement their governance strategies. The core
research question is: how do these two institutions seek to intervene and make
people engage with memories, histories and identities by creating cultural heritage
institutions and instruments?

This final chapter
takes up these questions, mining some of our ethnographies for support. One of
these is the basis for a short diversion to a Turkish coffeehouse in what used to
be the edge of West Berlin. This is a marginal story that turns out to be central,
allowing us to suggest that among the multiple Europes circulating and bickering in the air around us, there are still some others yet to be brought into sight. After
this, we close the book with some practical comments about what, in this time of
perceived crisis, should be done to re-orient ideas of the European past at the level of heritage practice.
