The res literature on the pol'al socialization of the Coll student was reviewed to seek confirmation or rejection of the reported `turn to the Right.' Studies from the 1920's to the 1960's were used & the following consistencies were demonstrated: (1) There is a high degree of socialization in the Coll culture, & a tendency for a homogeneity of friendships to develop. Bennington was the most signif illustration of socialization of Coll students into liberal pol'al norms. (2) There is a tendency to confuse Coll graduates with Coll students in assessing the values of each & their pol'al dynamics. Each represents a diff culture. Because graduates demonstrate more conservatism does not mean that undergraduates cannot be moving toward more liberal standards. (3) Students in general educ demonstrate more liberalism than those in technicalvocational areas, but general educ students are outnumbered. (4) Elements of personality development appear to accompany a more liberal, tolerant, flexible outlook & are associated with progress through the Coll yrs. Studies of the 1950's, though more sophisticated methodologically & diverse theoretically, are similar in their outcomes to the early classifications of Newcomb. It is concluded that a liberalizing trend is continuing in the Coll's, though it is less extreme & less ideologically centered. The evidence suggests that there is really less literalism & less conservatism per se being expressed by Coll students. Modified AA.
