IN A RECENT RESEARCH NOTE, PETER MORRISS UNCOVERS A SIGNIFICANT GAP IN COMMENDATORY ACCOUNTS OF CAPITALISM. MORRISS TRIES TO LAUNCH A STRONGER AND SHARPER ATTACK THAN THIS. HE ATTEMPTS TO SHOW THAT THE USUAL APOLOGETIC 'STORY' OF CAPITALISM IS A STORY WHICH INCLUDES THE VIOLATION OF PROPERTY RIGHTS. IF THIS IS SO, THE IDEALIZED VERSION OF CAPITALISM PRESENTED IN THE STORY CANNOT BE SUPPORTED BY MODERN RIGHTS THEORISTS-NOTABLY BY NOZICK. THE ARGUMENT DEPENDS ON ESTABLISHING A CONNECTED BETWEEN CAPITALISM AND THE VIOLATION OF RIGHTS, THROUGH THE NOTION OF BANKRUPTCY. THE NATION OF 'CAPITALISM' BEING USED IS PRETTY LOOSE, THOUGH THIS IS NOT CRUCIAL. THE REAL DIFFICULTIES IN MORRISS'S ACCOUNT ARISE FROM HIS AMBIGUOUS TREATMENT OF 'BANKRUPTCY.'
