(ICE)

We're in This Together: Intergenerational Health Policies as an Emerging Public Health Necessity
In: Frontiers in Human Dynamics, Band 2
ISSN: 2673-2726
The global handling of the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the lack of intergenerational public health solutions. Discontinuity of educational and health care services and environmental threats increase various pathologies and may provoke long-term health damage among the youngest. Unbalanced generational approaches within health policies have been evident before the pandemic and will continue to be a global challenge as both acute and chronic threats due to environmental hazards and social disparities are increasing. We therefore aim to bring with the present article the concept of intergenerational health to the center of socio-political attention as it must become beyond the COVID-19 crisis a core concept in the development and implementation of health policies.

Strategies to obtain highly ordered deuterated ices presented on the example of ice XIV
In: PNAS nexus, Band 2, Heft 12
ISSN: 2752-6542
Abstract
Highly ordered deuterated ices have been inaccessible in the past due to the unfavorable slow kinetics. On the example of ice XIV, we introduce three strategies in this study that enhance the degree of order compared with the literature approach of slow cooling. These strategies involve (i) isothermal annealing under pressure, (ii) aging at 77 K, and (iii) introducing isotope defects in addition to the previously used strategy of acid/base doping. We employ the techniques of calorimetry, dielectric relaxation spectroscopy, volumetry, and powder X-ray diffraction to investigate orientational order on the example of the ice XIV–XII order–disorder pair. These strategies allow us to access highly ordered D2O-ice XIV, tripling the degree of order reached in previous work. These strategies can be employed for other ice phases and hold the potential for future discoveries of new forms of ice with distinct material properties.
Disaster Response in Italian Nursing Homes: A Qualitative Study during the COVID-19 Pandemic
Nursing homes (NHs) have been among the care settings most affected by both the virus itself and collateral damage through infection protection and control measures (IPC). However, there is a paucity of research regarding disaster response and preparedness of these institutions. The present study aimed to analyze disaster response and management and to develop prospective strategies for disaster management in NHs. A qualitative survey including (i) residents, (ii) nursing staff, (iii) relatives of residents, and (iv) NHs' medical leads was performed. Data were collected by 45 in-depth interviews. Our results indicate that the shift from resident-centered care towards collective-protective approaches led through the suspending of established care principles to an emergency vacuum: implementable strategies were lacking and the subsequent development of temporary, immediate, and mostly suboptimal solutions by unprepared staff led to manifold organizational, medical, and ethical conflicts against the background of unclear legislation, changing protocols, and fear of legal consequences. IPC measures had long-lasting effects on the health and wellbeing of residents, relatives, and professionals. Without disaster preparedness protocols and support in decision-making during disasters, professionals in NHs are hardly able to cope with emergency situations.
