"There have been many books published about the coal mining industry of Britain but relatively few about the miners themselves. This book is unique in that it concentrates on the miner, his family and his work through a careful selection of illustrations. Although most of the images are photographic, and therefore relate to the latter part of the nineteenth to the closing years of twentieth century, use is also made of much earlier sources, from woodcuts and engravings to illustrations in contemporary journals and magazines. A good deal of the material has come from the author's own collection, accumulated over many years of research; and also from archive sources. The selection is wide ranging, covering the traditional coal mining regions of Britain, from Scotland and northern England, through the midland coalfields and to Wales, as well as images from smaller coalfields such as Cumbria and Somerset. Today, coal mining is a virtually a lost industry and the men, women and children involved in what was once Britain's most important economic but most dangerous activity deserve both recognition and celebration

In the period that we now call the Industrial Revolution mining disasters wrecked the lives of thousands of South Yorkshire families and devastated entire communities. The Husker pit flooding of 1838 in which 26 young girls and boys were killed shocked Victorian society and and was a significant factor in the 1842 Report on Employment of Women and Children in Mines; but earlier, long forgotten disasters are also explored. Cet article constitue une analyse critique de diverses tentatives de transplantation des concepts théoriques provenant d'autres domaines - notamment celui de la stratification sociale - à la sociologie urbaine. Ces efforts s'expliquent en grande partie par le fait que les transformations socio-économiques fondamentales affectant la ville n'étaient pas (et peut-être ne seraient pas) analysables en fonction des cadres théoriques traditionnels. Les récents travaux de certains auteurs, tels que Pahl et Rex, tout en étant critiquables sous maints aspects, ouvrent de nouvelles voies, et pour l'étude des problèmes urbains nouveaux, et pour la synthèse théorique des concepts plus traditionnels. En effet, en orientant l'attention sur l'étude de la pauvreté, sur le phénomène de privations cumulatives, sur la situation des immigrants récents, sur l'administration de l'habitat et sur le gouvernement des systèmes urbains globaux, ces auteurs ont mis en relief le problème du pouvoir dont la conceptualisation doit être à la base de toute théorie de la stratification.
