AbstractWe appreciate the opportunity to respond to the comments of the letter writer. The writer states in his Letter to the Editor that the findings in our publication are not interpretable and/or cannot be generalized due to the lack of understanding of the source mine and bulk content of the cosmetic talc used in the facial makeups. In brief, we performed an exposure simulation study using established industrial hygiene methods, planned and conducted by Certified Industrial Hygienists (CIHs), to assess asbestos exposures during the use of facial makeups that were found to contain very low levels of asbestos below the conventional detection limits of X‐ray diffraction and polarized light microscopy. In total, 54 personal air samples and 72 area samples were collected from six different products. Out of the 126 samples collected and analyzed, asbestos was only found in eight samples (five personal samples and three area samples). A 95th percentile 24‐h time‐weighted average (TWA) result of 0.00008 fibers/cubic centimeter was calculated based on censored data and an assumed three applications per day. We believe these results may be of utility to understand the risk of low‐level asbestos content in facial makeups regardless of source or bulk content, as described in our study, and do not find the writer's assertion of generalizability or interpretability to be compelling reasons not to apply our results, as is, for prospective purposes.

This study examined the relationships between self-construal and verbal promotion. U.S. American college students (N = 196) completed Kim and Leung's (1997) self-construal scale. Forty-three students with extreme scores on the scale's two dimensions of independence and interdependence subsequently participated in a brief phone interview for the possibility of receiving an award of recognition and money. Participants' interview responses were content coded for the amount of self-promotion (extolling one's own attributes) and others-promotion (extolling significant others' contributions to self-success). Self-promotion was positively associated with an independent self-construal but negatively related to an interdependent self-construal. Others-promotion was positively associated with an interdependent self-construal but negatively related to an independent self-construal. The results highlight the importance of self-construal in predicting verbal promotion.

AbstractThere has been renewed interest in the safety of cosmetics that may contain asbestos or other elongate mineral particles at very low levels as a naturally occurring contaminant. The authors evaluated asbestos exposure during the application of facial makeups in a constructed chamber simulating a bathroom space. The facial makeups tested included products previously found to have very low or "trace" asbestos content by governmental and commercial laboratories using a variety of bulk analysis methods. Tremolite asbestos was detected in five of 54 personal air samples and three of 72 area air samples in 18 simulations. The calculated geometric mean and 95th percentile task‐based asbestos concentration associated with personal facial makeup use in this study, incorporating censored data, is 0.0015 and 0.0018 fiber per cubic centimeter (f/cc), respectively, with a corresponding 95th percentile 24‐h time‐weighted average (TWA) asbestos concentration of 0.00008 f/cc for three applications per day in a simulated bathroom with no active ventilation. Based on these results, cumulative non‐occupational asbestos exposures confer a less than one in 1,000,000 risk of asbestos‐related disease based on many typical usage patterns and less than 1/100,000 risk with upper‐end lifetime usage patterns, using the US Environmental Protection Agency asbestos risk model.

28th Annual International Technology and Persons with Disabilities Conference Scientific/Research Proceedings, San Diego, 2013 ; The Institute on Disability and Public Policy (IDPP) for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Region was formally established in 2011 to partner with governments in the ASEAN region to foster public policies that promote persons with disabilities entering society to compete on a par with their non-disabled peers and prepare disabled leaders in the field of public policy. To address this mission, the world???s first virtual master???s degree program focused on the complex intersection of disability and public policy in the ASEAN Region using advanced cyberlearning techniques was created and specifically marketed to persons with disabilities in the ASEAN region. The infrastructure needed to deliver this type of program to learners in the ASEAN region and instructors all over the world required an accessible cyberlearning environment. This paper will explore the practical application of designing, developing and implementing an accessible cyberlearning environment.

Purpose: Alcohol can have serious side effects alone and can enhance the side effects of prescription opioids in unpredictable and dangerous ways. This study aims to identify risk factors for simultaneous use of alcohol and prescription opioids among young adults. Methods: Demographic characteristics, substance use, mental well-being, other substance-related factors, and simultaneous use of alcohol and prescription opioids were utilized to run multiple logistic regression analysis ( N = 1751; aged 18–25). Results: Mental well-being ( OR = 0.971, p = .003) and education level ( OR = 0.383, p < .001) were associated with a lower likelihood of simultaneous use. Knowing someone who had a fatal overdose ( OR = 2.443, p < .001), binge drinking ( OR = 1.065, p = .012), and older age ( OR = 1.250, p < .001) were associated with a greater likelihood of simultaneous use. Conclusion: The risk and protective factors identified in the current study point to specific areas for intervention to reduce simultaneous use. Further efforts are needed to minimize the increasing polysubstance-involved overdose mortality among young adults.

We investigated the uptake and perceptions of virtual care solutions by rural Canadian primary and specialist providers during the early phase (May-June 2020) of the COVID-19 pandemic. A web-based, cross-sectional survey of rural primary and specialty care providers examined types of virtual care platforms used (eg, phone, video), appointment length, experience and satisfaction with the solution used, plans for future use of virtual care, and patients' use of virtual care services. Targeted participants were actively-practicing providers in rural Western Canada who were emailed an invitation for the study and its survey link. Fifty-nine providers (26% response rate) completed the survey. During the pandemic, 78% of providers reported using virtual care for more than 60% of their appointments, while only 3% did so frequently pre-pandemic. Most providers used phone consultations, despite believing that video provided a better virtual visit. Key barriers included workflow interruptions, unique concerns about quality of care, remuneration and sustainability, or poor internet access and bandwidth for both providers and patients. The key opportunity noted was improved access to care. While most virtual care visits were not conducted using video technologies, overall virtual care resulted in high provider satisfaction, while not increasing workload. Virtual care will continue to play an important role in future rural care practice; however, sustainability will require both provider-level and system-level changes.

Abstract
Substance use rates are higher among transgender and gender-diverse people than cisgender people. Rates of substance use are also higher among young adults compared with other age groups. However, little research examines substance use among transgender and gender-diverse young adults. This study examines factors associated with binge drinking and cannabis use among transgender and gender-diverse young adults in Michigan. Participants (N = 78; ages 18–25) completed an online survey that included demographics and substance use and related characteristics. Race, stimulant misuse, and sedative misuse were associated with more frequent binge drinking. Older age and past-year pain reliever misuse were associated with less frequent cannabis use. Past-year stimulant use and using cannabis alone were associated with more frequent cannabis use. These findings suggest that additional marginalized identities may increase the risk for maladaptive substance use. Future research should examine substance use behaviors and correlates to inform interventions among this population.

Non-medical opioid use (NMOU) has had a devastating effect on families. Affected families may experience interpersonal and financial problems and self-stigma that can impede help-seeking and self-care. This study aimed to identify recommendations for families affected by opioids given by those with lived experience. Adults with a family member with NMOU ( N = 299) completed a survey that included an open-ended question asking for advice for other families similarly affected by opioids. Data were coded independently by research team members using an iterative approach to thematic analysis. Themes included seeking support, seeking education, and managing relationships with the loved one and others. Results highlight avenues for helping families cope while supporting a loved one who uses opioids, including contact with others with shared experience and access to educational resources. Families affected by opioids can provide valuable insights that should be considered when designing supports for families.

We demonstrate, to our knowledge, the first bright circularly polarized high-harmonic beams in the soft X-ray region of the electromagnetic spectrum, and use them to implement X-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements in a tabletop-scale setup. Using counterrotating circularly polarized laser fields at 1.3 and 0.79 µm, we generate circularly polarized harmonics with photon energies exceeding 160 eV. The harmonic spectra emerge as a sequence of closely spaced pairs of left and right circularly polarized peaks, with energies determined by conservation of energy and spin angular momentum. We explain the single-atom and macroscopic physics by identifying the dominant electron quantum trajectories and optimal phase-matching conditions. The first advanced phase-matched propagation simulations for circularly polarized harmonics reveal the influence of the finite phase-matching temporal window on the spectrum, as well as the unique polarization-shaped attosecond pulse train. Finally, we use, to our knowledge, the first tabletop X-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements at the N4,5 absorption edges of Gd to validate the high degree of circularity, brightness, and stability of this light source. These results demonstrate the feasibility of manipulating the polarization, spectrum, and temporal shape of high harmonics in the soft X-ray region by manipulating the driving laser waveform. ; The authors thank Wilhelm Becker and Luis Plaja for useful discussions.
