The Multinational Corporations and Inequality of Development
In: International social science journal: ISSJ, Volume 28, Issue 4, p. 754-772
ISSN: 0020-8701
The majority of critics interested in Third World problems fail to represent multinational corporations (MNC) as a factor contributing to increases, but see them as a primary, structural force--a factor contributing to the "freezing" of the periphery & contributing to a corresponding increase in the development of the dominant countries. Writers who base their opinions on revolutionary Marxism isolate the MNC as the characteristic evil of the century, & then study it concretely as an excrescence of the system. However, they continue to see salvation outside the system in planned local development; this is a contradiction between the analysis & the conclusions. Either the economic calculations of the MNC are essentially the same as those of any other capitalist undertaking, in which case the deadlock in certain countries can be explained by showing how the capitalist optimum differs from the social optimum--although the very existence of the MNC has a certain amplifying effect, or the MNC's calculations are basically in contradiction with those of the independent firm, in which case a simple anti-MNC policy & a return to a free market economy would liberate centrifugal forces. Überwiegend am Beispiel Afrikas setzt sich der Artikel mit den herrschenden Kolonialismus- und Imperialismustheorien auseinander. Er kritisiert, daß die Rolle der Kolonisation nur ungenügend berücksichtigt wird. (DÜI-Ker)
