PurposeThe aim of this paper is to provide insights and knowledge about the motivations and implications for social enterprises' participation in SIBs, particularly in terms of collaboration and partnership with the public sector, as well as the different positions on this issue. The overall aim, therefore, is to show how social enterprises and public organisations have interacted in the context of SIBs and what has been achieved by participating.Design/methodology/approachThis multiple case study approach applies qualitative methods like observations and semi-structured and unstructured interviews.FindingsThe study shows that SIBs can be an option for financing social enterprises within a strategy of income diversification and resource dependency. Despite tensions and complexities, SIBs can renew the traditional funding relationship by adding innovation, strengthening the co-creation process and creating a stable relationship.Research limitations/implicationsResearch findings may lack generalisability due to the specific context in which the case study is rooted.Practical implicationsThe paper offers practical implications in terms of insights and suggestions for social enterprises and the public sector interested in developing the scheme.Originality/valueThis paper adds the voice and perspective of social enterprises on the relationship with the public sector within the framework of SIBs initiatives.

The social impact bond (SIB) is defined as a form of payment-by-results scheme combining governmental payments with private investments. This paper explores the motivations and implications of three third sector organisations (TSOs) participating in SIBs in Continental Europe. It offers an understanding of the involvement of TSOs in this type of scheme; and it shares insights about a context that is different from the United Kingdom and the United States – the Netherlands – which presents the opportunity to expand our knowledge about SIBs.

Este trabajo parte del análisis de los datos sobre la creciente situación de pobreza y exclusión social en la UE y las consecuencias de los recortes en las políticas sociales. En medio de esta situación, atendemos a cómo entiende actualmente la Unión Europea el concepto de economía social de mercado y al equilibrio o no de los aspectos de estímulo de la competitividad, frente a la justicia social. Para ello nos detenemos especialmente en algunas iniciativas europeas recientes que consideramos especialmente ilustrativas de este enfoque, tales como las referidas a las empresas sociales, a la innovación social, a la responsabilidad social corporativa o la inversión social.

This work studies and analyses the reality of the different families that shape the Social Economy in the Basque Country: Cooperatives, Labour Companies, Special Employment Centers, Work Integration Social Enterprises, Fishermen's Guilds, Agricultural Transformation Societies, Mutual Societies, Associations, and Foundations. An aggregate study of the Social Economy in the Basque Country is also carried out and a reference to the Solidarity Economy is made. For each of them, its specific legal structure is analyzed, updated socio-economic data is provided, their associative structure is described, and the driving notions that characterize them and their challenges as a family of the Social Economy are discussed

Es evidente el interés de la Unión Europea por incentivar la Educación para el Emprendimiento en las universidades, así como también los gobiernos públicos como es el caso de España a través de las leyes dirigidas a las universidades. El objetivo de la presente investigación es analizar la presencia de la Educación Emprendedora en las metodologías de los rankings globales universitarios para medir el desempeño de las Instituciones de Educación Superior (Universidades y Escuelas de Negocios). Por tanto, la pregunta de investigación formulada es: ¿Cómo los indicadores utilizados por los rankings mundiales miden el desempeño de las universidades en la Educación para el Emprendimiento? Utilizando la base de datos del Observatorio de International Ranking Expert Group se seleccionan las categorías de Ranking Global Universitario y Ranking de las escuelas de negocio, representando un total de 30 rankings como muestra del presente estudio. Nuestros hallazgos concluyeron que la Comisión Europea y el gobierno español fomenta la educación en emprendimiento desde el marco público, pero la muestra de rankings internacionales seleccionada para este estudio no tiene en cuenta el criterio de emprendimiento como parte de la evaluación del desempeño universitario.
