This book analyzes UN intervention discourses and practices in Iraq and develops a deconstructive approach to international interventions. Hitherto, most analyses of the conflict in Iraq in 2003 have established the UN's role as path-dependenton the foreign policy of the US and the UK, and largely portrayed it as a mediator and fervent opponent of international intervention. Analyzing the UN Security Council and the later UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) from 2000 to 2010, this book undoes this path-dependency and puts the UN's relationship with Iraq center-stage. It develops a deconstructive, critical approach that identifies subject construction and reflexivity as central processes of intervention practices and concludes that (non-)intervention is deeply connected to the stabilization of political identities and representations. Using extensive primary data, the book contributes a new perspective on international interventions. This book will be of much interest to students of peace and conflict studies, intervention and statebuilding, Middle Eastern studies and International Relations.

This paper addresses terrorism trials as sites of research and proposes an approach for the analysis of ethnographic data collected during these trials. The suggested approach offers multi-level analytical access, it centres around interactionist conceptions and knowledge discourses. The conceptual framework we suggest is spelled out in terms of how to observe and being sensitive of (re-)production of power structures inside the courtroom as well as in regard to relations imported into the courtroom. For this purpose, we integrate the micro-level of courtroom interactions (i) and (self-)presentation, (ii) the meso-level of knowledge discourses (iii) and the macro-level of social structure, informing legal and security policy. By applying a multi-level approach, we open up new explanatory avenues to understand the constitution of terrorism as a socio-legal object. The methodical framework connects hitherto unconnected elements, i.e. (i) participants' interactions and negotiation, (ii) their (self-)representations, ascriptions and narrative performances, and (iii) knowledge (re-)production in order to establish or maintain political and social orders.

The current paper documents the results of a multi-disciplinary international workshop on ethics in (de-)radicalization research, organized by the authors at the Bochum Center for Advanced Internet Studies (CAIS) in March 2019. In light of the specificity of each research context, this paper aims to develop a baseline for ethical standards across projects, disciplines and contexts. The aim is to provide the instruments that allow for a project-specific setup that enables researchers to develop their own concepts and solutions in the context of their empirical field. The following sections elaborate on the above issues, pointing to practices and possible proceedings so as to ensure ethical standards in (de)radicalization research.
