The popular assertion among economic historians that the increase of political freedoms throughout Europe via civil conflict accelerated the preindustrial development of European nations is challenged. It is contended that liberal democratic institutions will not necessarily advance a high degree of commitment to maintaining individual property rights. Analysis of the 19th-century Dutch government & economy demonstrates that political freedom did not perpetuate economic growth; conversely, it is stated that political freedom initiated a period of economic decline in the Netherlands. Multiple claims used to support the aforementioned hypothesis are scrutinized. D. C. North & B. Weingast's (1989) study of the Glorious Revolution's effects on English economic growth is used to partially challenge the antithetical relationship between economic development & political freedom. Future research is urged to investigate the influence of decision-making structures & administrative systems on civil liberty. 41 References. J. W. Parker
