Argued for is consideration of a somewhat different approach to the subculture of violence thesis than has traditionally been taken. Drawing on qualitative materials relating to adolescent gangs in the Chicano barrios of East Los Angeles, it is suggested that, in this subculture, there exists both a relatively autonomous value set (often referred to in the literature as machismo) that is compatible with normative support for violence, & a strong dependence of violence on structural conditions which determine what effect the values will have. The perspective is illustrated by an examination of changes in the role of machismo & the incidence of gang violence during a period of major political change in the community. AA.
