Explores the differential political effects created by the production of knowledge & culture of lesbian & gay life by community intellectuals vs university intellectuals. It is suggested that a tension has always existed between these groups because of their differential access to resources of authority. The examples of the spread of camp & the idea of safe sex show that community intellectuals can exercise profound influence in shaping a sense of collective identity; however, the forms of vernacular knowledge they use are inherently fluid & unstable. Academic intellectuals are in a much stronger position to exercise cultural authority, because they have access to the material & symbolic power bestowed by academia. It is argued that the continued progress of cultural politics in the gay & lesbian community requires both vernacular & disciplinary knowledges so that the community can strenghten its solidarity while maintaining its legitimacy. The massive mobilization of civilians & the armed forces in the US during WWII transformed the sex/gender system. Since then various groups dissatisfied with the social relations of sex & gender have become politicized, & have mobilized to reorganize social norms regulating gender & sexuality. The postwar sexual revolution is charted through three analytically distinct phases. (1) On the basis of a gap discovered between sexual norms & behavior, Alfred Kinsey & homosexual emancipationists formulated a critique of sexual norms. (2) During the highly contradictory period of prosperity brought on by Keynesian economic policies, there were marked reactionary tendencies toward gender (attempting to keep women in the home), sexuality (violent repression of homosexuals), & an extreme pronatalism (the baby boom). In this period a number of intellectuals developed a critique of sexual repression. (3) An Ur subculture of lesbians & gay men emerged during this phase, which allowed homosexuals to reinterpret the symbolic significance of sexuality and gender. Modified AA

Though today's LGBTQ people owe a lot to the generations who came before them, their historical inheritances are not always obvious. Working with the archives of the Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender Historical Society, artist E.G. Crichton decided to do something to bridge this generation gap.
