Adopting an intersectional lens, this book comparatively examines the multiple processes and systems of power that frame the experiences of female entrepreneurs in the Caribbean and the fluid ways in which they respond to these. Specifically, it challenges entrepreneurial scholars who are concerned with the experiences of women within that sector to critically interrogate interlocking structures of power (e.g. gender, race, class, age, industry-based hierarchies) that operate within that space, the marginalizing effects of related processes, and the extent to which these affect their thinking and practices of female entrepreneurs within the region. Through comparative lenses, the book highlights the structural and relational realities and complexities that undergird the entrepreneurial landscape within the region, the effects of these on the entrepreneurial identities, positionalities, and practices of female entrepreneurs. It underscores the many ways in which they navigate that terrain. In so doing, the book offers critical insights into the historical, socio-cultural and economic parameters within which female entrepreneurs in the region engage, the lived realities associated with these, the prospects or possibilities for re-presenting or re-framing such contextual and discursive spaces. It also provides necessary understandings of the motivations, positions, prospects, possibilities and constrains of entrepreneurial women in the region and the policy implications of these realities. This book offers insights for scholars and policymakers that are important for (i) understanding the current gaps in entrepreneurial research and policy, (ii) the tools, methods, and strategies that are needed to address these contextual and discursive realities, and ultimately, (iii) the ways in which policy makers and local governments can promote the authentic empowerment of female entrepreneurs in the region, while giving considerations to precarious realities of women. Talia Esnard is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Behavioral Sciences at the University of the West Indies. She has published on issues related to women, work and organizations with particular emphases on women in academe and in the entrepreneurial sector. She recently authored a student textbook, Entrepreneurship in the Caribbean and co-authored the book Black Women, Academe, and the Tenure Process in the United States and the Caribbean. .

Abstract
Over the past three decades, there has been a growing interest in the role of female entrepreneurship as a missing link in the economic quagmire facing developing countries. However, while this attention has been marked by noted policy initiatives that seek to link current research to some measure of capacity building for women in that sector, wider research suggests that women combining work and family roles often experience taken-for-granted complications in establishing some degree of work-life balance. These are often neglected in entrepreneurial policy formation. Despite this, little research within developing regions like the Caribbean investigates the complexities related to the experiences and practices of navigating the combined roles of work and family for vulnerable subgroups like single mothers. The aim of this study is to explore, through in-depth phenomenological interviews, the situated nature of single mothering for female entrepreneurs in St. Lucia. Findings point to moral mothering as central to their perception, experiences, and decisions related to mothering and entrepreneurship. Findings also suggest that these women adopt creative strategies for working within these domains. Implications for future research are also discussed.

While a growing tendency among researchers has been for the examination of diverse forms of discrimination against Afro-Caribbean immigrants within the United States (US), the types of ambiguities that these create for framing the personal and professional identities of Afro-Caribbean women academics who operate within that space remain relatively absent. The literature is also devoid of substantive explorations that delve into the ways and extent to which the cultural scripts of Afro-Caribbean women both constrain and enable their professional success in academe. The call therefore is for critical examinations that deepen, while extending existing examinations of the lived realities for Afro-Caribbean immigrants within the US, and, the specific trepidations that they both confront and overcome in the quest for academic success while in their host societies. Using intersectionality as the overarching framework for this work, we demonstrate, through the use of narrative inquiry, the extent to which cultural constructions of difference nuance the social axes of power, the politics of space and identity, and professional outcomes of Afro-Caribbean immigrant women who operate within a given context. These are captured within our interrogation of the structures of power that they confront and their use of culture to fight against and to break through institutional politics.
